Milwaukee Latino Carnaval joins parade of ethnic festivals

A six-day Milwaukee Latino Carnaval will make its debut this week, showcasing the city's diverse Latino community.

Organized by Juan Carlos of local JCS Consulting Solutions and a team of 30 community members, Latino Carnaval was inspired by Rio Brazil and other international carnivals that use arts, entertainment, food and music to celebrate and educate people about Latino diversity and traditions.

The event, which runs through Saturday, kicks off at 6 p.m. Monday with a cultural program followed by a free tequila tasting and costume party at Wherehouse, 818 S. Water St.

On Tuesday, patrons will meet at Journey House, 2110 W. Scott St., for free mask- and headdress-making from 4 to 6 p.m. Artists will be there to assist attendees, who will showcase their masks from 6 to 6:30 p.m. A large mask unveiling begins at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the UCC, 730 W. Washington St., with senior citizens and youth.

Carlos said the DJ contest is no longer scheduled for Thursday despite its listing on the event's website. However, Gallery Night Out will be at 6 p.m. at INdustri Caf?, 524 S. 2nd St. It's $25 to ride the Art Bus for a tour of five local galleries with complimentary beer, wine and appetizers. The bus will return to INdustri at 10 p.m. for a VIP party. Party cover is $5 for those who weren't on the Art Bus.

The carnaval's grand parade starts at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce of Wisconsin, 1021 W. National Ave., featuring Queen of the Carnaval, Maria Monreal-Cameron, outgoing president and CEO of the Hispanic Chamber of Commerce. Roughly 17 Latin countries will be represented during the parade, which ends at 12:30 p.m. in the parking lot at 818 S. Water St., with DJ competitions, food, and traditional and salsa dancing.
