We don't want anyone to get too excited and set themselves up for a heartbreak just yet, but a leaked document from Best Buy pins the Ice Cream Sandwich update for the Droid RAZR and RAZR MAXX for April 4, and the HTC Rezound on April 6. Anyone with a HTC Thunderbolt can tell you more about dates provided through Best Buy, and Motorola still hasn't given any type of ballpark date for the update for the RAZR and RAZR MAXX, which are still listed as being in the "evaluation and planning" stage. We've seen ICS leaks for both devices (the RAZR and RAZR MAXX run the same software) but nothing official from anyone involved. Both phones were to have ICS "soon" after release, but so far we're still waiting.

We want it to be true. We hope it's true. We're just naturally skeptical, especially when a third party like Best Buy is involved. We're sure nobody is trying to troll the Internets, but anyone who has worked in a corporate environment knows how things get fouled up. Here's hoping, and we'll know next week!

More than 20 students were awarded for their excellence in music and art at the New Providence Board of Education meeting Thursday night where the board applauded the students for their efforts and encouraged the continuation of education in the arts.

Susan Vogel, who distributed the awards, said the level of talent was incredible and that the district takes pride in the accomplishments of the students ? many of which reached statewide bands and choirs.

?Membership in these groups are hard-won and prestigious,? she said.

Parents, some with flowers but all with cameras, clapped for their kids as each one was given a certificate of accomplishment for their talents.

After the kids left, the board discussed several action items, including the mandatory report about harassment and bullying in the schools. The board did not release any information about specific incidents, but did indicate the school district logged eight reports of harassment or bullying ? two in the high school, four in the middle school and one each in Allen W. Roberts School and Salt Brook School.

The board also passed a resolution for Teacher Recognition Week during the week of May 6.

Board member William Dibble said the teachers, many who also engage in extra curricular activities with the students, continue to provide excellent instruction and counseling, and are deserving of a week of recognition.

Fossil rain suggests the atmosphere 2.7 billion years ago boasted a hydrocarbon haze

Some 2.7 billion years ago in what is now Omdraaisvlei farm near Prieska, South Africa, a brief storm dropped mild rain on a new layer of ash laid down by a recent volcanic eruption (not unlike ash from the 2010 Eyjafjallaj?kull eruption in Iceland) forming tiny craters. Additional ash subsequently buried the craters and, over eons, hardened to become rock known as tuff. Closer to the present, other rainstorms eroded the overlying tuff, exposing a fossil record of raindrops from the Archean eon, and may now have revealed the density of early Earth's atmosphere.

By scanning with lasers the craters created by ancient raindrops?and comparing the indentations with those made by water drops sprinkled onto a layer of similar ash today?physicist Sanjoy Som of the University of Washington in Seattle and his colleagues have derived a measurement of the pressure exerted by the primitive atmosphere. The scientists report in Nature on March 29 that the ancient air could not have been much denser than the present atmosphere?and, in fact, may have been much less so. (Scientific American is part of Nature Publishing Group.)

"Air pressure 2.7 billion years ago was at most twice present levels, and more likely no higher than at present," Som explains. The key to that determination is raindrop size. Back in 1851 pioneering geologist Charles Lyell?suggested that measuring the fossilized indentations of raindrops might reveal details about the ancient atmosphere. These mini-craters are formed based on the size and speed of ancient raindrops.?Because the atmosphere drags on each drop, constraining the speed of its descent based on its size, if one could determine an ancient raindrop's size, one could determine how thick the atmosphere likely was.

The largest raindrop ever measured in modern times was 6.8 millimeters around, Som notes, which is also the theoretical limit; larger raindrops break apart. Because the laws of physics were likely the same in the distant past, this suggests that raindrops were no bigger in the Archean and puts an upper limit how big the ancient drops could have been. Plus, such raindrops are exceedingly rare in modern storms?and tend to fall in powerful downpours, which in the Archean would have been more likely to have washed ash away rather than form craters that could be fossilized.

To determine the size of the ancient droplets, Som and his colleagues compared the fossilized imprints with the craters that formed when they released various-size droplets from 27 meters above similar ash taken from the 2010 Eyjafjallaj?kull eruption in Iceland as well as from Hawaii. They then turned these modern craters to "rock" "using hair spray and low-viscosity liquid urethane plastic." Based on the comparisons, they concluded that the size of ancient droplets fell in the range of 3.8 to 5.3 millimeters.

Plugging those numbers into the mathematical relationship between raindrop size, speed and atmospheric density suggests that the early Earth's atmosphere exerted at most twice as much pressure as the present day atmosphere?assuming raindrops of the maximum size and speed created the craters?and more likely was roughly the same or as little as half present pressure.

A better understanding of the properties of Archean Earth's atmosphere may help explain what's known as the "faint young sun" paradox. Billions of years ago, the sun emitted less radiation, roughly 85 percent of its present output, and therefore heated the planet less. Yet, the fossil records suggest abundant liquid water and other signs of a warm, "clement" climate, as Som and colleagues noted in the analysis. The simplest explanation for this is that Earth simply boasted an atmosphere thick with greenhouse gases. "The sky was probably hazy," from the gases, Som says, in addition to being ruled by a fainter sun that passed across the sky more quickly because Earth rotated faster then. Plus, the atmosphere lacked a significant quantity of oxygen (because there were no plants), potentially lightening the atmospheric pressure. "Earth back then looked nothing like it does today."

Ripping electrons from their cores: Physicists mix two lasers to create light at many frequencies

ScienceDaily (Mar. 28, 2012) ? A team of physicists at UC Santa Barbara has seen the light, and it comes in many different colors. By aiming high- and low-frequency laser beams at a semiconductor, the researchers caused electrons to be ripped from their cores, accelerated, and then smashed back into the cores they left behind. This recollision produced multiple frequencies of light simultaneously.

Their findings appear in the current issue of the science journal Nature.

"This is a very remarkable phenomenon. I have never seen anything like this before," said Mark Sherwin, whose research group made the groundbreaking discovery. Sherwin is a professor of physics at UCSB and a co-author of the paper. He is also director of the campus's Institute for Terahertz Science and Technology.

When the high-frequency optical laser beam hits the semiconductor material -- in this case, gallium arsenide nanostructures -- it creates an electron-hole pair called an exciton. The electron is negatively charged, and the hole is positively charged, and the two are bound together by their mutual attraction. "The high-frequency laser creates electrons and holes," Sherwin explained. "The very strong, low-frequency free electron laser beam rips the electron away from the hole and accelerates it. As the low-frequency field oscillates, it causes the electron to come careening back to the hole." The electron has excess energy because it has been accelerated, and when it slams back into the hole, the recombined electron-hole pair emits photons at new frequencies.

"It's fairly routine to mix the lasers and get one or two new frequencies, Sherwin continued. "But to see all these different new frequencies, up to 11 in our experiment, is the exciting phenomenon. Each frequency corresponds to a different color."

In terms of real-world applications, the electron-hole recollision phenomenon has the potential to significantly increase the speed of data transfer and communication processes. One possible application involves multiplexing -- the ability to send data down multiple channels -- and another is high-speed modulation.

"Think of your cable Internet," explained Ben Zaks, a UCSB doctoral student in physics and the paper's lead author. "The cable is a bundle of fiber optics, and you're sending a beam with a wavelength that's approximately 1.5 microns down the line. But within that beam there are a lot of frequencies separated by small gaps, like a fine-toothed comb. Information going one way moves on one frequency, and information going another way uses another frequency. You want to have a lot of frequencies available, but not too far from one another."

The electron-hole recollision phenomenon does just that -- it creates light at new frequencies, with optimal separation between them.

The researchers utilize a free electron laser -- a building-size machine in UCSB's Broida Hall -- to produce the electron-hole recollisions, which they note is not practical for real-world applications. Theoretically, however, a transistor could be used in place of the free electron laser to produce the strong terahertz fields. "The transistor would then modulate the near infrared beam," Zaks continued. "Our data indicates that we are modulating the near infrared laser at twice the terahertz frequency. This is where we could really see this working to increase the speed of optical modulation, which is how you get information down a cable line."

The electron-hole recollision phenomenon creates many new avenues for research and exploration, Sherwin noted. "It is an interesting time because there are a lot of people who can participate in doing this kind of research," he said. "We have a unique tool -- a free electron laser -- which gives us a big advantage for exploring the properties of fundamental materials. We just put it in front of our laser beams and measure the colors of light going out. Now that we've seen this phenomenon, we can start doing the hard work of putting the pieces together on a chip."

In discussing the research team's discovery, Sherwin cited Michael Polanyi, the Hungarian scientist and science philosopher. "He talked about growing points in science, and I'm hoping this is going to be one of those, where a lot of people can use it as a foundation for going off in a lot of different directions," he said. "I want to continue working on it, but I'd like to see a lot of other people join in."

Also contributing to the research is the paper's second author, R.B. Liu of The Chinese University in Hong Kong. "This is an excellent example of the value of communicating with scientists from all over the globe," said Sherwin. "If we had never met, this research would not have happened."

Contracts for US homes dipped in February

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The number of Americans who signed contracts to buy U.S. homes dipped in February from nearly a two-year high.

The National Association of Realtors said Monday that its index of sales agreements declined 0.5 percent last month to a reading of 96.5. January's reading of 97 was the highest since April 2010, the last month buyers could qualify for a federal home-buying tax credit.

A reading of 100 or higher is considered healthy. April 2010 was also the last time it was that high.

Contract signings typically indicate where the housing market is headed. There's a one- to two-month lag between a signed contract and a completed deal. A sale isn't final until a mortgage is closed.

More signings are among recent signs of a slight pick-up in the housing market.

January and February made up the best winter for re-sales in five years, when the housing crisis began. And builders are more confident about the market and have is year. In February, they requested the most permits to build single-family homes and apartments since October 2008.

Homes are the most affordable they've been in decades. And mortgage rates remain a bargain.

An improved job market may also be helping home sales. The economy has added an average of 245,000 jobs per month from December through February. The unemployment rate has fallen to 8.3 percent, the lowest in three years.

Another reason for the uptick in sales: Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac have both announced they plan to raise the fees on mortgage applications in April. The government-controlled mortgage buyers own or guarantee about half of all U.S. mortgages and 90 percent of new loans.

Analysts caution that the damage from the housing bust is deep and the industry is years away from fully recovering.

Potential buyers are holding off for a number of reasons. Despite the recent job gains, unemployment remains high. Many buyers can't qualify for loans. Lenders are requiring higher credit scores and larger down payments.

And some who can qualify are hesitant to buy because they worry home prices will keep falling.

KEY BISCAYNE, Fla. (AP) ? On the verge of victory, Roger Federer stopped playing when he thought a pivotal point had ended.

He mistook a fan's shout for a linesman's call, which cost him the game. Play continued for another 25 minutes before Federer finally closed out his opening match at the Sony Ericsson Open by beating 19-year-old American Ryan Harrison 6-2, 7-6 (3).

"I'd like to make it a bit more difficult for my opponent," Federer said. "I was just completely confused about the whole situation."

Serena Williams, Maria Sharapova and Andy Roddick won in more straightforward fashion, but two-time champion Kim Clijsters was eliminated.

Federer led 5-2 in the second set and had a chance to finish in less than an hour until he lost two fluky points that extended the match.

Serving at 5-3, Federer blew an easy overhead to fall behind 15-30. One point later, facing break point for the only time in the match, Federer hit a forehand that landed on the baseline.

A fan hollered "Out!" and Federer stopped. By the time he realized the ball was still in play, Harrison had won the point ? and the game.

"It completely threw me off," Federer said. "It's the first time it has ever happened in my career. I was like, 'That's it? That's a break point? This is how this is going to happen?'"

Harrison took advantage of the break, although he said he felt bad about it.

"Obviously I want to win every point the right way, and not because something happened," the teenager said. "Unfortunately somebody interrupted play."

After Harrison held twice to force the tiebreaker, Federer hit a spectacular lunging lob to turn a scrambling exchange his way for a 4-2 lead. Four points later, he closed out his 40th victory in the past 42 matches.

"I felt like I had to win the match like three times at the end, so I was relieved to come through," he said.

Federer has a 77-match winning streak against players outside the top 20. Harrison is ranked 73rd but on the rise.

"He'll make his move up the rankings," Federer said. "He's a good athlete. I hope he stays healthy so he can show everyone what he's got."

The No. 3-seeded Federer's opponent in the third round will be another American, familiar foil Roddick. They've played 23 times and Roddick has won only twice, although he did beat Federer at Key Biscayne in 2008.

"There's no getting around the fact that he has been the biggest obstacle in my career," Roddick said. "His game matches up well against mine."

Roddick lost only five points on his first serve, never faced a break point and beat Gilles Muller 6-3, 6-2. Roddick is trying to improve a ranking that has dropped to 34th, the lowest he has been since 2001.

Williams started early and finished fast. Walking onto the stadium court at 11 a.m., Williams dominated with her serve, played consistently from the baseline and moved into the fourth round by beating Roberta Vinci 6-2, 6-1.

Williams was done shortly after noon.

"I'm not a morning person," she said. "I actually hate morning matches, but I always do my best at 11 o'clock matches."

Williams won most of the short points and a succession of long rallies as well. She hit 25 winners while committing 20 unforced errors.

Seeded 10th, Williams is making her return to tournament tennis after a two-month absence because of a left ankle injury. At No. 20, Vinci is the highest-ranked player Williams has beaten this year.

Williams is seeking her first tournament championship since August, and she's bidding for a record sixth title at Key Biscayne.

"I need trophies," she said. "I want to add more and to do more. There are records to break. So I'll do it. I've just got to believe it. I do believe it."

Sharapova, seeded second, beat American qualifier Sloane Stephens 6-4, 6-2. Clijsters, coming back from an ankle injury, lost to No. 23 Yanina Wickmayer 6-4, 7-6 (5).

No. 8 Mardy Fish was among 12 seeded men to advance. One lost: No. 15 Feliciano Lopez was beaten by fellow Spaniard Albert Ramos, 6-4, 7-6 (5).

The Cat-Bird Conflict - ABA Blog

They say that fools step in where angels fear to tread. Well, here I go!

I got another one of those emails where you?re asked to vote for a cause to receive a charitable donation from a major foundation. I honestly hate these things on so many levels. In the first place, it points out how many amazing causes are in desperate need of support. As a volunteer for a couple of non-profits, I really understand that. Who could imagine the lengths we are willing to go to in order to get a bit of financial support! In the second place, these votes typically push conservation efforts to the bottom of the priority list. How can you expect the general public to vote for saving a wetland (known by most as a swamp) when they are looking at pictures of hungry children, dilapidated schools, battered pets and people struggling to overcome illness or disability? And then there?s the cats and the ?trap, neuter, release? programs?

I love cats. A lot of my non-birder friends think it?s strange that someone who cares about birds and conservation could love cats. A lot of my birder friends have no problem understanding it. A recent poll on the Wild Bird magazine website showed that 58% of the respondents had at least one cat. Cat loving and wild bird loving are not mutually exclusive! Our cats and birds fill completely different needs for us. However, there?s no question that there is a conflict, and it?s outdoors.

Even well-fed cats will hunt. Their skill at killing rodents endeared them to many settlers, but they are proving to be too good at it for native birds and animals.

So how do we resolve this conflict? I will confess that I?ve been a convert since about 1990, and as any of you who have had to deal with people who have stopped smoking or quit some other habit, converts can get a little bit evangelical. I used to let my cats go outdoors. I thought it would be cruel to keep a cat indoors. I never liked them catching wild animals and birds, but my last indoor/outdoor cat was not a hunter. (Yes, I really believe that some cats do not kill birds.) I knew, and used, all of the excuses.

In fact, it wasn?t even a love of birds or nature that prompted me to keep my cats indoors. A neighbor trapped my cat! I couldn?t find Rufus for days. For more than a week, I wandered the neighborhood calling his name. I put up posters. I put ads in the paper. I even checked with highway maintenance to see if they?d found his body. I was heart-broken. For some of us, our pets really are more like furry children. After eight days, a much thinner cat with worn claws and foot pads finally came home. It was shortly after this that I found that 14 cats had gone missing in our neighborhood and that a trap had been found in a yard in the middle of the ?no cat zone?. This neighbor didn?t love birds?he loved gardening and hated cats. After, that, I still allowed Rufus outside, but only under supervision. Then I moved. Whew! What a relief it was to be away from such a dreadful neighbor.

At our new house, I kept Rufus on a leash for the first week so that he could get used to his new surroundings. When I finally let him off his leash, he made a bee-line to a neighbor?s yard. I was determined to keep a closer eye on my cat, so I followed, only to find a tin of poison laced with sardines on my new neighbor?s carport floor. Was there no safe place left for a cat? I started hearing horror stories about how people were trapping cats throughout our city and killing them. My blood pressure rose thirty points every time this made the news. The choice was clear. If I loved my cat and wanted to keep him safe, I was going to have to keep him indoors.

After Rufus came Okie and Hobbes--100% indoor cats except on leashes or on a high enough deck that they wouldn?t jump to the ground. And guess what? They were happy, healthy, energetic pets. I was a convert. The number one ?must have? for my next home purchase was a deck that the cats could use and not get to the ground. Did I mention that I love cats? Sam and Mushu followed, and have been indoor cats since I got them. They are also healthy and happy. And Mushu, if given a chance, would kill every bird in my yard. Despite my efforts, there is still about one bird a year that meets its end on my deck.

Mushu, a stray that may have become feral, found a home with an elevated deck fills his desire for trips outdoors.

Pre-conversion, I scoffed at the statistics. The numbers put out by bird protection groups like the American Bird Conservancy and their British counterpart seemed greatly inflated, extrapolated from a highly successful hunting cat. Then I heard a statistic that I didn?t have trouble believing?the population estimate of cats in North America. There are over 100 million pet cats on the continent. If they each only caught one bird a year on average, that?s 100 million birds! And that doesn?t even take into consideration the estimated 40 million feral cats which would clearly take a lot more. I had to concede that this was an issue.

A dead bird on the doorstep is usually an indication of a kill by a well-fed cat.?

While some folks still don?t agree that this is a problem, there are lots of people trying to address this issue, in very different ways. Pet owners are becoming more responsible. More and more of us are keeping our cats indoors, or outside in enclosures or on leads. Some cities are implementing bylaws to license and/or neuter cats and generally make owners more responsible. There are bibs that some owners put on their cats which apparently do prevent them from catching birds, but I suspect the cats wearing them are so humiliated that they probably don?t even want to venture out where anyone can see them. I actively encourage outdoor cat owners who won?t keep their pets indoors to at least keep them in until a couple of hours after sunrise and during the twilight hours when birds are most active. I also remind them that when a cat kills a bird in the spring, there?s probably a nest of babies left starving somewhere out in their neighborhood. You?d be surprised how many people hadn?t considered that.

The feral cat population is a whole other matter. The feral cat protectors (who, for the most part, also like birds), killing the free-roaming cats is not an option. I honestly don?t want the cats killed either. Let?s face it, the problem is the people that let the cats go, not with the cats themselves. They are doing what comes naturally, but unfortunately, they are doing it in a part of the world where the resident species can?t naturally expect them. That?s the crux of the issue. An introduced, very efficient predator is going to wipe out a lot of na?ve natives.

The cat advocates are not happy that these descendents of pets released by irresponsible owners have to forage in the alleys of the city or in the wild just to survive. Enter trap, neuter, release or TNR. The TNR programs are intended to gradually reduce the feral cat population through natural attrition as the reproductive abilities of the cats are limited by neutering. I can find statistics that shows that these programs are working in some locations and not working in others. The ?carrying capacity? of an area (i.e. the number of animals that can survive on the available food resources) is increased by the cat feeding programs that invariably go along with TNR. One un-neutered female can easily make up for any natural attrition in fairly short order. Whatever the success or numbers, cats in the wild will continue to take a toll on birds and small mammals.

Trapped, neutered and not released, Boodah, his mother and one other feral cat are now much loved and happy indoor cats sharing a house with two cat and bird loving humans.

For the most part, I believe that the TNR and cat advocacy groups truly hope that every cat will be a wanted pet. The bird advocates want every cat to be a wanted pet and kept under control. There are more shared objectives here than differences, yet we seem to often find ourselves in heated battles. Trap, neuter, release doesn?t protect the birds, but it?s undoubtedly better than not neutering the cats. It may not be reversing the number of feral cats, but it certainly must be slowing the growth of the feral population.

There?s no doubt that people are a major part of the problem when it comes to bird population issues. We?ve found so many highly efficient ways to kill birds?windows, habitat destruction, pesticides, transmission towers, cars, and cats just to name a few. Of all of these, we may have our greatest opportunity to limit the damage by being responsible for our cats.

So I?m throwing it out there. What can we do as bird advocates to work with the cat advocates to achieve our common objectives? Encourage cat licensing/neutering bylaws? Help cat protection agencies find homes for abandoned pets? Take in a feral cat or two?? Support TNR until we find a better solution? Come on, cat/bird lovers! Let?s figure this one out.
