(AP) ? Thousands of conservative Christians gathered Saturday on Independence Mall in Philadelphia to pray for the future of the United States in the weeks before the presidential election.

Religious broadcaster Pat Robertson and Family Research Council president Tony Perkins topped a full day of speakers at "The America for Jesus 2012" prayer rally.

Robertson, a former Republican candidate for president, called the election important, but didn't mention either major political party or candidate by name.

"I don't care what the ACLU says or any atheists say. This nation belongs to Jesus, and we're here today to reclaim his sovereignty," said Robertson, 82, who founded the Christian Coalition and Christian Broadcasting Network, and ran for president in 1988.

Organizers plan another prayer rally Oct. 20 in Washington, D.C., two weeks before President Barack Obama faces Republican Mitt Romney in the presidential election.

Perkins asked the crowd to pray for elected officials including Obama.

"We pray that his eyes will be open to the truth," Perkins said.

A number of event organizers, though, have been vocal critics of the Democratic president.

Steve Strang, the influential Pentecostal publisher of Charisma magazine, which was distributed at the rally, recently wrote in a blog post that America is under threat from a "radical homosexual agenda." He also said Obama "seems to be moving toward some form of European socialism."

And speaker Cindy Jacobs has blamed a mysterious Arkansas bird-kill last year on Obama's repeal of the policy known as "don't ask, don't tell," which allows gays and lesbians to serve openly in the military.

Speakers throughout the day condemned abortion, gay marriage and population control as practiced by Planned Parenthood. Christian rock music filled the historic mall as speakers challenged the crowd to overcome the seven deadly sins: pride, greed, lust, envy, gluttony, wrath and slothfulness.

The rally was held outside of Independence Hall, where the Declaration of Independence was signed. Pennsylvania is also where evangelist George Whitefield preached during the first Great Awakening, the 18th-century religious revival that spread through the American colonies.

NHL Lockout 2012: Owners, Union Continue To Meet, But Only Discussing Secondary Issues

The good news is that for the first time since Sept. 12 -- three days before the NHL lockout became official -- the owners and the Players' Association have met. And when Sunday concludes, they will have done so for three straight days. The bad news is that the two sides have not discussed the component -- how to split hockey-related revenue -- that in essence has spurred the work stoppage.

Make no mistake about it: the sheer fact that the owners and players continue to meet is a great sign. However, until the core economic issues are hammered out, this lockout is still very much far from over.

Over the past two days, the sides have convened to discuss the secondary components that will still go to the creation of a new collective bargaining agreement. On Friday, topics such as medical care, drug testing, training camp and the schedule were touched on and meetings lasted for seven hours. On Saturday, the two sides went over the definitions of what comprises hockey-related revenue and that lasted about four hours. In theory, a mutual agreement of what its "definition" is should help the basis of the next proposal, whether that's by the owners or players. One would think that when the grey areas are cleared up, the next CBA offer should be a little more "acceptable."

Of course, when the next proposal will be made remains the big question. Time is ticking down to where the new CBA has to be agreed upon or regular season games will start to be crossed off. Some have said that a new deal will have to be reached by the middle of the coming week as the season starts Oct. 11 and it will take time for the players, coaches and other personnel to get ready. It's not like a deal gets done Sunday, teams will begin training camps the next day, especially with many players already overseas or still at home, away from their team's city.

Sunday, the agenda likely will include health and safety issues and other legal topics, according to the Sporting News. More talk on the definition of hockey-related revenue could also be revisited because a mutual agreement was not found just yet.

Even though commissioner Gary Bettman and NHLPA head Donald Fehr did not attend these meetings with the group, they had their own, private talks.

Leave it to Fehr to describe the nature of these:

"I spent a few minutes with Gary talking about the overall situation, and we agreed to keep in touch," Fehr said Saturday, as reported by the Sporting News. "I am sure we will talk again (Sunday). I don't know whether will meet again (Sunday). That remains to be seen.

"I am not going to talk about the specifics, but in general we're trying to discuss how do we find a way to make an agreement. How do we bridge the gap on the major issues that are between us."

NHL deputy commissioner Bill Daly on Friday said that the owners needed to hear from the players that they would compromise on the hockey-related revenue split in order to for the "meaningful issues" to be discussed. As such, Daly even acknowledged Saturday that topics talked about this weekend have been considered the " underbrush." That means nothing is likely to get done without the players budging. If the general feelings of players that the union is stronger than ever is correct, we could still be in for a long work stoppage and even a lost season. The silver lining remains that the two sides will be meeting for the third straight day Sunday and nothing can ever get done without that happening.

Syrian fighting torches historic medieval market

BEIRUT (AP) ? A fire sparked by battles between Syrian President Bashar Assad's troops and rebel fighters tore through Aleppo's centuries-old covered market Saturday, burning wooden doors and scorching stone stalls and vaulted passageways. The souk is one of a half-dozen renowned cultural sites in the country that have become collateral damage in the civil war.

The damage to one of the best-preserved old souks in the Middle East was the worst yet to a UNESCO World Heritage site in Syria. Across the country, looters have broken into a historic castle, stolen artifacts from museums and damaged ruins in the ancient city of Palmyra, antiquities officials and Syrian experts say.

The Aleppo market, a major tourist attraction with its narrow stone alleys and stores selling perfume, fabrics and spices, had been the site of occasional gun battles and shelling for weeks. But amateur video posted Saturday showed wall-to-wall flames engulfing wooden doors as burning debris fell away from the storefronts. Activists said hundreds of shops were affected.

"It's a big loss and a tragedy that the old city has now been affected," Kishore Rao, director of UNESCO's World Heritage Center, told The Associated Press by telephone from Paris.

Most of the other sites recognized as heritage sites by UNESCO, the global cultural agency, are also believed to have suffered damage during the 18-month battle to oust Assad, Rao said. The ancient center of Aleppo ? Syria's largest city ? has been hit the hardest, he said.

"It is a very difficult and tragic situation there," said Ahmad al-Halabi, a local activist speaking by phone from the area. He said rebels and civilians were trying to control the blaze, but only had a few fire extinguishers.

The fire in the souk erupted late Friday and was still burning Saturday, following fierce fighting between regime troops and rebels trying to drive pro-Assad fighters out of the city of 3 million.

On Thursday, rebels launched what they said would be a "decisive battle" for the city, followed by days of heavy fighting, including shelling and street combat. Amateur video has shown rebels taking cover behind walls and makeshift barriers, attacking regime forces with grenades and assault rifles. Activists reported heavy shelling by pro-Assad troops.

Once considered a bastion of support for Assad, Aleppo has become the focus of the insurgency for the last two months, with rebels taking about half the city. Aleppo would be a major strategic prize: A rebel victory would give Syria's opposition a major stronghold near the Turrkish border, while a regime victory would give Assad some breathing space.

It's not clear what set off the fire in the old market, made of hundreds of stone stalls that line covered alleys with vaulted ceilings. Amateur footage posted online by activists showed flames engulfing the shops and rebels aiming a water hose at the fire. The shops' wooden doors, along with the clothes, fabrics and inside some of the businesses, helped fuel the blaze, activists said.

The market stalls lie beneath the city's towering 13th century citadel, where activists say regime troops and snipers have taken up positions.

The Syrian conflict has killed more than 30,000 people, according to activists. It has also wreaked widespread destruction, particularly in recent weeks as regime forces stepped up air strikes and shelling attacks, and rebels fired mortar shells and rocket-propelled grenades. Entire neighborhoods in Syria's three largest cities ? Aleppo, the capital Damascus and Homs ? have been devastated.

A majority of Syria's 23 million people live in a thin western sliver of the country; in this territory, rebels have established positions in rural areas, while Assad's forces are trying to hold on to the cities.

Aleppo's old center was added in 1986 to UNESCO's list of World Heritage sites. Of the medieval souks in the Middle East, Aleppo's was among the best-preserved, offering visitors a range of architectural styles covering hundreds of years, said Rodrigo Martin, a Brussels expert on Syrian historical sites.

"It was a unique example of medieval commercial architecture," said Martin, a spokesman for a group of experts who monitor damage to Syrian historical sites and cooperate with the U.N. cultural agency.

Some of the other prized cultural attractions have also suffered damage.

Earlier this year, looters broke into Crac des Chevaliers, one of the world's best-preserved Crusader castles, a Syrian antiquities official said at the time. Shelling also damaged the site, said Martin, citing amateur video.

The ruins of the ancient city of Palmyra were damaged by fighting, Martin said, according to reports he received from Syria. He said he had seen video that showed sculptures being taken away from Palmyra in a small truck.

The other World Heritage sites on UNESCO's list are the old center of Damascus, one of the most ancient cities in the Middle East; the ancient city of Bosra, once the capital of the Roman province of Arabia; and a group of some 40 villages of north-western Syria that date from the first to seventh centuries.

Rao, the World Heritage chief, said the U.N. agency has asked Syria's neighbors to be on the alert for attempts to smuggle looted objects out of the country. No incidents had been reported so far.

Lesser sites have also been affected in Syria. Regime shelling of neighborhoods where the opposition is holed up has smashed historic mosques, churches and souks in the central Homs province and elsewhere in the country. Looters have stolen artifacts from museums.

Martin said the Syrian regime bears the bulk of the responsibility for the destruction because it signed international agreements to protect cultural sites.

For at least two millennia, cultural sites have been threatened or destroyed by wars throughout the Mideast, Martin said.

"History continues, whatever we do," Martin said. "Mankind can just be really destructive."

GROWTH SLOWER: The U.S. economy grew at a sluggish 1.3 percent annual rate in the April-June quarter, the Commerce Department said Thursday. That's down from the government's previous estimate of 1.7 percent growth and slower than the 2 percent rate In the January-March quarter.

DROUGHT IMPACT: The severe drought cut farm production in the Midwest, accounting for roughly half the downward revision. The government also said consumer spending and exports also grew more slowly.

ECONOMIC OUTLOOK: Economists forecast growth at a rate of 1.5 percent to 2 percent in the January-March quarter. That's too slow to lower the unemployment rate.

Simple Ideas For Success At Your Next Home Improvement Project ...

The last thing you want is poorly done work! That is the reason it is essential to know exactly what you are doing before starting a home improvement project. Continue reading to learn some great tips on how to become an excellent repairman in no time.

It can be a very massive expenditure to buy brand new furniture. Look around at garage income and thrift stores for some interesting, new-to-you furniture. It is doable to find some wonderful furniture treasures in a second-hand or consignment shop. You might have to touch them up, but they could be a great addition to your home.

Make sure that you?ve got a good plan before starting any home improvement project. You should know exactly what you want to do and enumerate any time or budget constraints before construction begins. This will prevent the project from taking too long or costing more than you thought.

When you?re painting walls, you have to be sure that you correctly tape the trim off. Paint runs more often than not, no matter how carefully it is applied. Careful use of tape will protect your woodwork from unwanted paint drips. If you do get paint on the trim, those surfaces might need to be repainted.

Make sure that the home improvement work you do can be easily seen. Potential buyers will go by what they can see, so you need to do what you can to make your home presentable enough to sell. Even though a number of important home improvements can't be seen, if you want to sell your home you must focus on the ones that can be.

Make sure you do one home improvement project at a time so you can still stay in your own home and save money. This will grant you to live in your home more easily, unless you?re working on your only bathroom! If you don?t have more than one bathroom, you might need to stay with friends or family.

Improve the entrance way to your home with a fresh splash of paint and new welcome rug. The entrance to your home makes a huge difference in how welcome your guests feel. A few nice touches, such as an captivating plant or a charming welcome mat, serve to make a great impression on people coming to your home.

It is important to determine an estimate of tools and materials before starting any project, except perhaps really small jobs. Buying materials in bulk can save quite a bit of money. If there are special-order items, these will frequently be more costly or will involve shipping costs. If you decide to go ahead with your project you should find out how soon you?ll have to order these supplies to have them ready when you need them. Your project could get held up if you have to move for materials to arrive.

If you don?t do home improvements right, you can shorten the lifespan of both your upgrades or repairs, and possibly the functional existence of your home. Use what you have learned to create a comprehensive plan and refrain costly mistakes.

Ex-Iran president's son returns from exile, faces charges

DUBAI (Reuters) - The son of former Iranian president Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani returned to Iran from exile to answer charges of inciting unrest after a disputed election in 2009, fuelling speculation that Rafsanjani's influence in Tehran may once again be growing.

Mehdi Hashemi Rafsanjani arrived in Tehran late on Sunday, Fars news agency reported, having spent three years in the United Kingdom following his alleged involvement in the widespread protests that followed the re-election of President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

Mehdi Rafsanjani had spent several days in Dubai and been expected to return to Iran on Sunday, an independent source told Reuters.

Analysts say his return indicates a deal has been agreed with authorities to resolve the charges he faces, and suggests his father's political fortunes may be reviving.

Akbar Rafsanjani played a central role in the Non-Aligned Movement summit in Tehran last month, being photographed walking alongside Iran's most powerful authority, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, and sat next to U.N. Secretary General Ban-Ki Moon.

As oil sanctions continue to bite and with a presidential election set for next year, some are tipping the pragmatic yet conservative Rafsanjani as a surprise candidate.

The Rafsanjanis have faced heightened pressure from hardliners since the 2009 vote, which set off the deepest political crisis and worst unrest in Iran since the 1979 Islamic Revolution.

The former president is one of the founding figures of the Islamic Republic and a close aide to the revolutionary leader Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini.

But his backing of opposition candidates in 2009 and sympathy for opposition demonstrators incurred the anger of conservatives and led to a decline in his influence.

Mehdi Rafsanjani's return comes 24 hours after another member of the powerful and wealthy Rafsanjani family, his sister Faezeh, began a six-month jail sentence for "spreading anti-state propaganda".

Her conviction at the start of this year is believed to be over an interview she gave to an opposition news site in which she criticized human rights violations and economic policy in Iran.

Is Free and Traditional PR Distribution Still Relevant

The way in which businesses communicate with each other and customers, both current and prospective, has drastically changed in recent years. The digital age is upon us and social media sites like Twitter and Facebook lead the way, closely followed by the impact of online networking and SEO. These radical changes means that companies no longer need to create press releases to distribute to journalists with the hope of publication. All this leaves one question unanswered; ?Is free and traditional PR still relevant??

    ?

Here are some great reasons to make you aware of the positive benefits traditional PR can provide you and your business with.

    It?s credible ?

Spreading the word and getting the business noticed through the traditional channels like newspapers and magazines is still extremely beneficial and can seriously boost their profile and public perception. This is especially effective when press releases are displayed in reliable and well-respected sources.

    ?

    Strategic positioning
Traditional PR provides the benefit of expert positioning which can ensure a business and its news is seen by the people they want to see it, within their desired industry. For example, if you ran a pharmaceuticals business, having your latest news or information displayed in a medical or health related magazine or supplement would be highly constructive. Free or traditional PR gives that luxury.

    ?

    Gets the brand noticed
Although social media and online blogging provides extensive distribution channels and routes to the consumer, the same can also be said for the traditional methods. If releases are issued within respectable and credible magazines and newspapers, it means the reach is varied and the amount of possible readers and consumers is huge, leading to high levels of exposure for the brand.

    ?

    Brand reputation
A credible press release that shows a brand in a good light is essential to boost reputation. For example, if the business was going through a difficult period or the public?s perception of the brand was poor, a positive press release within a good source could work wonders to improve opinion.

    ?

    Limited competition
As the digital age has swept the globe and social media being the driving force, it?s easy to see why so many businesses have been enticed by it and are using it to get their brand noticed. This however means that the traditional channels are being neglected and that many companies can use it without the fear of excessive rivalry and vying for exposure.

Q&A: Jacob Rooksby on higher ed patents | Academe Blog

Jacob Rooksby is an assistant professor of law at Duquesne University?s law school. His research looks at the intersection of intellectual property law and higher education, and he is a contributor to the newest issue of?Academe.?His article is ?Sue U.? and explores what happens when universities get into the game of developing, licensing, and protecting patents. I spoke with him by e-mail about the issues raised in his article.

What do you think every faculty member or researcher should know about university-owned patents?

As a general matter, they should know that patents are different from copyrights, a concept more familiar to most faculty. ?Universities historically have not claimed copyright ownership in books, articles, and other scholarly works created by their faculty. ?The same is not true for patentable inventions, the ownership of which faculty members must assign to their university employers, per the terms of employment contracts & related institutional IP policies.

Patents that stem from faculty research can be very valuable assets. ?With this value often comes difficult decisions with ethical consequences: whether to seek patent protection, and how to license patents once issued. ?For example, is it appropriate for the University of Utah to own patents on the ?isolated? genes BRCA 1 and BRCA 2, which account for most inherited forms of breast and ovarian cancers? ?Many would argue that genes, as fundamental building blocks of nature, should not be eligible for patent protection in any form (although to date,?courts have disagreed?with that proposition as a matter of law). ?Further still, is it appropriate for the University of Utah to exclusively license its isolated gene patents to only?one company, as it has done, which charges monopoly prices to perform clinical diagnostic testing? ?Would it not better serve the public good, and the mission of the publicly-supported University of Utah, to allow any interested party to use the patents cheaply for any commercial or non-commercial purpose?

Courts tend to shy away from these issues, drawing a distinction between patent eligibility (a legal issue they decide) and patentability (a policy decision for would-be patentees to decide). ?Given the policy and ethical considerations inherent in this debate, it deserves the attention and participation of all faculty concerned for the evolving role and function of research universities in an innovation-based economy.
It seems logical enough that diverting resources to developing and maintaining patents can be bad for faculty and staff at a university. But, one?argument you make is that even though it can bring in money, these patents can end up being bad for a school?s finances. Can you explain how that?works?

The thrust of my argument is that if universities are in for a penny they should be in for a pound.??Seeking to obtain and license patents is a labor-intensive and costly activity that is not best played with half-measures.??University research goals shouldn?t be exclusively patent- or revenue-driven, but for those patents a university does own, it should treat them as the serious assets they are.??That means being willing to sue infringers when necessary so ongoing licensing efforts are not undermined (in short, why should one company pay if others get away with not paying?).??Universities that are unwilling to take such action ? a hesitancy which, to be clear, I sympathize with ? need to seriously question why they seek patents in the first instance.??Rights accretion for the sake of playing in the university arms race is a costly proposition that makes little economic sense in the long run if an institution is unwilling to stand by those rights when they are infringed.??As a TTO director interviewed in a?previous study?I conducted on this topic told me, ?A patent without enforcement is a piece of paper with?Dave Kappos?s signature on it.??That?s all it is, you know.??It?s a very expensive piece of paper.??If you?re not willing to enforce it, that?s all you?ve got.???And I agree.

Legally, is there a distinction between public and private schools when it comes to patent licensing? In your opinion, is there an ethical?difference?

As to the first question, the more relevant distinction concerns the research dollars going to universities that give rise to patents, and where that money comes from. ?Most research conducted by faculty at universities is funded by the federal government. ?The Bayh-Dole Act applies to all university research funded by federal grants from (for example) the National Institutes of Health, the National Science Foundation, the Department of Defense, and other such governmental agencies. ?This law allows universities to claim ownership of any patent-eligible discovery that flows from such research so long as certain conditions are met. ?Universities then have an obligation to commercialize the research findings through licensing arrangements intended to benefit American industry and the consuming public. ?Universities and their faculty also often enter into private research agreements, known as sponsored research. ?Which party enjoys ownership of any patents that may result from such research is up to the individual institution and research sponsor to decide, although typically any patents resulting from these relationships go to the university.

As to the second question, ethically I see little difference. ?If we believe that non-profit higher education exists to serve the public good, then our expectations for university behavior should not vary depending on whether an institution is publicly- or privately-funded. ?Both types of institutions benefit from the public purse (and other favorable treatment society confers on them). ?In turn, we should expect them to benefit us.
Under what circumstances would it make sense for a university to invest heavily in protecting and licensing its patents?

As a general proposition, I think it makes sense for a university to invest heavily in protecting and licensing its patents if it already has a hearty research infrastructure in place. ?Some institutions seem convinced that if only they throw more money at their TTO, windfall returns eventually will be realized. ?Research shows it doesn?t work that way. ?Windfalls are rare because the most valuable patents don?t get created out of thin air. ?Laboratories, equipment, sizable research grants, and most importantly, a deep pool of talented, research-oriented faculty, all need to be in place before it?s reasonable to think that a university will do anything other than lose money or at best break even through technology transfer.

My corollary to this point is that universities ? even ones well-equipped to achieve successes in patenting and licensing ? shouldn?t invest heavily in these activities unless they are willing to stand by them in the face of public outcry and potential backlash from lawmakers, faculty, alumni, students, and donors. ?The University of California ? mentioned in my article for Academe as having recently lost a patent infringement lawsuit in Texas against many ?brand name? companies ? is an example of a university committed to its patents no matter the fallout. ?Just this past week?it again filed suit?with its alleged ?patent troll? licensee, Eolas Technologies ? this time against Wal-Mart, Facebook, ABC, ESPN, and Walt-Disney.

But not every university that seeks patents has the same stomach ? or budget ? for litigation. ?All the more reason for each university active in this space to consider whether it?s willing to affirmatively litigate in order to protect its patents. ?Those that aren?t committed or effectively able to do so might be better served to invest money elsewhere. ?Indeed, they might better serve society by doing so.

Is Going for Rapid Growth Always Good? Aren't Startups So Much ...

I think I?ve read Paul Graham?s post on ?Startup = Growth? three or four times now. And of course on Twitter I?ve seen the Tweets, ReTweets and superlatives on what a great post it is.

Viewing the article through the lens of a venture capitalist there?s much to agree with under the mantra of ?growth!? And when you read the article carefully it allows for a period of discovery in your business. For example

?The growth of a successful startup usually has three phases:

    1. There?s an initial period of slow or no growth while the startup tries to figure out what it?s doing.
    2. As the startup figures out how to make something lots of people want and how to reach those people, there?s a period of rapid growth.
    3. Eventually a successful startup will grow into a big company. Growth will slow, partly due to internal limits and partly because the company is starting to bump up against the limits of the markets it serves.?

There?s an allowance for a period of time where there?s ?slow or no growth? while you?re figuring things out.

He also talks about the rate of growth and the need to pick targets, measure and question assumptions when you aren?t achieving your objectives. I spend a lot of time encouraging startups with whom I work to take measurement more seriously. I talked about some of that here.?So I like that bit, too.

He talks about making things that people want & going after a big enough market. Check.

He also nails the reason why venture capital is still necessary to grow large businesses quickly in a world where the costs of running startups have fallen dramatically

?Why do founders want to take the VCs? money? Growth, again.

The constraint between good ideas and growth operates in both directions. It?s not merely that you need a scalable idea to grow. If you have such an idea and don?t grow fast enough, competitors will.

Growing too slowly is particularly dangerous in a business with network effects, which the best startups usually have to some degree.?

This is a frequent theme of mine when asked to speak to audience about the VC industry. ?Lean? is great in the early days but if you discover an attractive market opportunity you need to get ?fat? really quickly or somebody else will.

As a person who spends much time thinking about the venture capital & startup community and who has seen good times & bad times across many economic cycles the article is well written.

    Still.

I worry that many people will read this post and get the wrong message. And the wrong message is frankly strewn all over Silicon Valley.

Founders will continue to take the ?growth at all options? path that leads to privacy & trust creep at places like Quora. Startups will continue to be aggressive in spamming us in our Facebook timeline. Fooling us into downloading an app to watch a video and afterward feeling duped.

After all, growth equals high valuations and loads of venture capital! And headlines. And approbation.

But for every breakout that works are probably 10,000 that don?t. And many of these companies burn through cash too quickly trying. Or pivot too quickly. Or only go after markets for which network effects are possible.

And this is fueled by the VC culture in Silicon Valley.

I was recently talking to a VC about a business I was looking at and I was asking whether he found the business interesting, too. He said, ?I?m not really convinced. The company hasn?t really reached ?escape velocity? which means it must not be working.? Escape velocity. The speed needed to ?break free? from a gravitational field without further propulsion.

Reach it quickly or investors will look elsewhere. I know that some of the best businesses have seen this rapid acceleration quickly: Google, Facebook, Instagram, AirBnB and the like.

I think that our industry is too quick to believe that it?s ?up and to the right? quickly or it?s time to move on to the next thing. Investors seem to think this way these days. And so do entrepreneurs who are quick to pivot to new businesses or to sell in an acquihire.

And you can follow the craze for instant growth right up the value chain. LPs (the people who invest in VC funds) want to know what ?hot? deals you?re in. ?What exits have you had?? ?What, since ?09? If I exited those wouldn?t it sort have been a ?. failure? I?m shooting for 7-to-10-year exits.? Most LPs are not. They want to know that you?re in Twitter, Facebook, Square, Fab and the like.

Instant growth = huge valuation from follow-on investors = big VC mark-up on our quarterly reports = LP interest. Grow or die.

I don?t really think the incentives work well in this scenario. It encourages a bit too much FOMO (fear of missing out) and over-valuation in companies?and a desire to do huge financing rounds to be perceived as the ?knock-out winner.? How?d that turn out in the late 90?s? It?s been high tide since 2009 so an entire batch of entrepreneurs don?t know what low tide even looks like.

To be clear, growth is really important when I?m an investor. But I do wonder about a couple of things:

    1. Some businesses take a bit longer to?percolate.?There?s a saying in startups that ?being too early is the same as being wrong? and that?s true. There are times where your solution should work but it just doesn?t. It might be for technical reasons or it might be for customer adoption reasons. I?ve seen this happen before where companies seems to be struggling with traction and one technology change at an industry level suddenly propelled them more rapidly. If you tried to build Instagram before the iPhone, for example, there was almost no way you could have seen their growth rate.

And the ?stay lean? argument isn?t only good for entrepreneurs, it can be good for VCs, too. In a pool of 25-30 investments in a VC fund the goal is to have 2-3 huge outliers, each of which return the total fund size. It is VC math, like it or not. Our partners have invested in more than dozen companies that became worth more than a billion dollars and that has disproportionately driven returns.

But 98% of VC exits in our industry are sub $100 million. So investing $3-5 million in a company and taking a year to 18 months to see how it develops before adding more fuel can often be the right course of action. Pile on huge VC money behind you and you have the same problem entrepreneurs have when they raise too much money.

As I?ve looked through our own returns I see many 5-8x returns that contributed greatly to our financial results. Fred Wilson talked about this too, in his spot-on post about ?the fallacy of bi-modal returns? which is worth reading for anybody interested in VC math.

    2. Some entrepreneurs can make a dent in a smaller world. I think the one thing that niggles me that most is reserving the word ?startup? for only super-growth, Silicon Valley style businesses. I think we should encourage an entire generation to think about building startups. But ?my definition of the word is much broader. Business that are innovative. That leverage technology or drive change. Businesses that are probably on a rapid growth scale by historic levels but would prove very bad investments for venture capitalists.

Has Silicon Valley really become so elitist that it wants to reserver the word ?startup? for companies only with the ambition of hyper growth?

I started talking about this 3 years ago to audiences where I encouraged (and still do) most people NOT to raise VC. And I?ve talked openly about why many services businesses should not feel product envy and chase the commensurate growth rates.

    3. Are we not subtly convincing too many people to ?go big or go home?? I don?t love that culture. I love it in a subset of people & businesses. I love it in the companies in which I invest. Still, I think many entrepreneurs are done a disservice by buying into this mantra.

Why? Many entrepreneurs would have / could have built successful businesses that changed their lives, enriched their careers, provided value to customers and made money for those involved. Perhaps I feel this way because it?s my story.

I built two companies. Neither achieved the kind of growth rates associated with Silicon Valley but both grew significantly faster than traditional industries and both were innovative.

My first company was used to manage workflow & share CAD drawings and plans on the $16 billion refurbishment of the London Underground. It was also used as a project management tool & document storage system for the largest private bank in Europe who even stored images of their bank vaults on our servers. We worked with police departments, the ministry of defense, many of the largest utility companies in Europe and a ton of contractors, engineers, architects, developers and suppliers.

In revenue terms our first two years of sales were $2.1 million and then $5.9 million.

We sold the company when we hit $36 million in bookings and $16 million in SaaS GAAP revenue. Not Google. But a tremendous experience for everybody involved.

Many people made money. Not Eff You money but money that changed ?lives forever.

And many people?s careers were launched.

David Lapter?our CFO & the best one I ever worked with. Now he?s CFO of Fab.com
Stuart Lander, who was the President & COO is now helping run Internships.com
Ryan Lissack is the CTO of Maker Studios
Tim Barker is the CPO of DataSift?(and prior to that headed European marketing for Salesforce.com)

I?m pretty sure all of these guys feel that they worked at a ?startup.?

And many more employees parlayed their experience working with us into careers at Google, Microsoft, Oracle, Salesforce.com and elsewhere.

And it launched this author?s career and taught me everything I know about sales, marketing, hiring, firing, fund raising and so on.

I don?t know how you can call that experience anything but a startup.

Our second company was bought by Salesforce.com. It?s now the foundation for Salesforce Content. Used by millions of users.

No tiny islands were bought with the proceeds but every member of our team earned more money than we had seen in our lives.

I could look back and say we should have tried to be Box or Dropbox. But we didn?t. And I don?t believe any of the team members have regrets about the outcomes of their lives or the experiences they have had since.

So before we rush to define startups as a Silicon Valley, go big or go home, grow at all costs, succeed quickly or move on culture I think we should reflect on the encouragement we want all future entrepreneurs in this country to have.

I know that Paul Graham never said you had to be high-growth startup. I read his post carefully enough to know that he really just described the?phenomenon?that we uniquely see in Silicon Valley and that drives many VC businesses and some of the fastest growing companies in our industry.

But I believe that without presenting the other case to my definition of startup entrepreneurs who want a different path and who are young & impressionable they might read into Paul?s post a certain religion of going for instant, rapid growth. Just the same way that ?pivoting? in lean startup terminology initially talked about launching features and pivoting your product as customers gave you feedback and morphed into ?it?s ok to start by doing subscription commerce and if it doesn?t work relaunch as a mobile payment platform business.?

I want the definition of startup back. To be used by anybody who is willing to take the risk to quit their corporate job and go out and try and built an innovative, disruptive, tech-enabled business that tries to change the way things work in the world.

It?s ok to build a company that stays small, has a few million dollars in revenue and builds careers, bank accounts and enriches client experiences.

It?s also ok to raise venture capital and try to build a monster business. But know that if you don?t go ?up and to the right? you might find yourself abandoned (unable to raise more VC) or even ousted (to bring in a CEO who can show rapid growth or die trying) in the name of growth & returns. It happens more than is reported.

It?s also ok not to raise venture capital. To aim at changing a small corner of your world or industry. Or your life.

And I applaud all of you who try.

Syrian rebels claim downing of military plane

Syrian rebels say they have brought down a fighter jet near the town of Atarib in Aleppo province, in video obtained by the Reuters news agency, as the commander of the country's main rebel group said?was moving its command centre from the Turkish border into Syria.

Reuters could not confirm the authenticity of the?video in which rebels also appeared to have surrounded a military building near the town of Awrem, said to be loyal to President Bashar al-Assad's government.

"God's willing the building 46 has been attacked which?is located near Awrem. God also helped us and we brought
down a Mig warplane," one rebel was?reported as saying by the news agency?on Saturday.?

"So many groups took part in the?attack. Most of the brigades in the area participated in?this operation.''

The video also purports?to show an attack on the headquarters of regiment 46 near?Atarib.

A witness, an independent journalist who asked to remain anonymous,?said that rebel fighters were attacking a military base near the town when the jet flew over and rebels shot it down with anti-aircraft guns.

    Aleppo attack

Al Jazeera's Nacer El-Bedri, reporting from Aleppo, said the attack by one of the main brigades of the Free Syrian Army (FSA)?took place around 6am, local time on the western side of Aleppo.

Syrian rebels claimed the?downing of a?military plane

"The attack took place against the regiment 46 which is one of the last outpost regiments based in the city of
Aleppo, which is one of the elite, special forces.

"They surrounded the base and they attacked it by RPG [Rocket Propelled Grenade] - by morter, and the Syrian Free Army claim that they managed to overrun and take control of the base.

"The information that we have is that they have managed to inflict heavy damage onto on the outpost and surrounding check points, but we have no confirmation that they have been able to outrun it," said our correspondent.

"It seems from the bombing that followed, in the surrounding areas, by?the artillery and by aircraft, that a serious blow was inflicted by the Free Syrian Army on the?Syrian government's army in the region."

The government force seems and looks overstretched in the number of frontlines that they are fighting and the FSA seems to have the upper hand, and to gain streets and districts day by day, said our correspondent.

    Shift of command centre?

In another development,?the FSA said on Saturday?it was moving its command centre from the Turkish border into Syria itself in preparation of an offensive against Assad's troops in Damascus.

Riyad al-Asaad, commander of the Free Syrian Army (FSA), announced the move on Saturday in a video message from Syria, the first since the group founded its command centre in Turkey at the beginning of the 19-month conflict.

"To the Syrian people, its freedom fighters and all the armed factions, we are glad to let you know that the leadership of the FSA has moved into Syria following arrangements made with other brigades that included securing liberated areas with the hope of launching the offensive on Damascus," Asaad said.

He said?the FSA has felt pressure by the international community to take a leading role in post-war Syria.?Asaad said the FSA rejected those offers, reiterating that the people of Syria should decide the future of the country.

"Since we left our country we suffered all sorts of regional and international interference and political pressure, we were isolated.

"Their goal was to have the FSA replace Assad once he is gone, but we categorically made it clear that we would never betray our people reiterating that only the Syrians should decide their future institutions.?

Al Jazeera's Andrew Simmons, reporting from Akcakale on the Turkey-Syria border, said the rebels have been cautiously edging forward, taking territory 5km inside Syria.

"The move of the command centre is not necessarily a massive breakthrough because the FSA is still very much dependent on Turkey for its supply lines," he said.

    'Border clashes'

In?other?developments on Saturday, Syrian?government troops and rebels clashed near a border crossing with Jordan, opposition activists said.

?Al Jazeera's Hashem Ahelbarra discussed challenges for the Free Syrian Army despite its alleged gains

The fighting, accompanied by heavy shelling from government troops, raged on Saturday near the busy Al-Nasib border crossing located on a highway linking the Syrian and Jordanian capitals, according to the activists.

Egyptian Middle East News Agency (MENA) quoted a high-ranking Jordanian official as denying the reports about clashes between Jordanian and Syrian armies.

The official confirmed that Jordanian soldiers shot in the air to distract the Syrian soldiers from chasing refugees during their attempts to cross the border.

Vastly outgunned, rebels say they need surface-to-air missiles to take down?fighter jets?and helicopters used by the Syrian military to bombard opposition strongholds.

    Anti-aircraft guns

Fighters use outdated anti-aircraft machine guns that are welded to pickup?vehicles but they are inaccurate and useless if the military aircraft fly above a certain altitude.

On August 27 fighters shot down a helicopter on the outskirts of Damascus and three days later rebels said they had brought down a jet in Idlib, near the Turkish border.

Elsewhere in Syria, activists said government jets bombarded areas in Yabroud, near the capital Damascus, and pro-rebel districts in the embattled northern city of Aleppo.

Independent verification of reports out of Syria is constrained by media restrictions imposed by the government in Damascus.

At least 150 people, mainly near Damascus and Aleppo, were killed across Syria on Friday, the opposition Syrian Observatory for Human Rights?reported.

Also on Friday, Iraq has barred a North Korean?aircraft from using its airspace on suspicion it was carrying weapons for Syria, regional media reported.

Earlier this week, US officials accused Iraq of allowing Iran to fly arms to Syria using the Iraqi airspace, a charge denied by the Baghdad government.?North Korea and Iran are allies of Assad.

Activists say more than 27,000 people, mostly civilians, have been killed in the uprising in Syria, which?began with peaceful street protests that provoked a military crackdown and mushroomed into civil war.

Despite calling for Assad to step down, the West is wary of arming disparate rebel groups.
