Shanghai subway crash revives safety concerns (AP)

SHANGHAI ? A crash on one of Shanghai's newest subway lines, the latest stumble in China's rush to roll out modern services, is focusing attention on the use of high-tech signal systems that at times are anything but fail-safe.

The collision Tuesday, which the government says injured 284 people, revived complaints that China is sacrificing safety in its zeal for fast results.

The subway operator, Shanghai Shentong Metro Group, said one of its trains crashed into another near the city's scenic Yuyuan Garden due to problems with signal systems supplied by a state-owned venture whose equipment was implicated in a deadly bullet train crash in July.

It was not the first problem on the line. A mishap involving the misdirecting of a train two months earlier had resulted in assurances of no more accidents from the maker of the signal system, Casco Signal Ltd.

"We certainly intend to get to the bottom of this," the metro's chairman Yu Guangyao told reporters.

Casco, a joint venture of China Railway Signal and Communication Corp., or CRSC, and France's Alstom, SA, was set up in the mid-1980s and is a major supplier of signal systems and other electronic equipment for China's railways and subway systems.

It also supplied a centralized traffic control system for the railway in east China's Zhejiang province where two bullet trains crashed on July 23, killing 40 people and injuring 177.

While the two systems are not the same, the problems with signaling and communications on the subway's "Line 10" raised eyebrows: At the time of the crash, the crowded trains were operating at lower than usual speeds and being directed via phone by subway staff rather than by electronic signals.

High-tech automatic train protection systems, installed to improve safety while allowing more trains to travel within shorter intervals, normally would signal the presence of the train, preventing another from approaching. But such systems sometimes fail due to circuit problems, as with a June 2009 Metro train derailment in Washington, D.C. that killed nine people.

Like the bullet train crash, which experts say resulted both from equipment and human error, Shanghai's problems likely are not limited to the signaling equipment.

"There is no doubt that the signaling equipment is the most direct and obvious cause," said Li Hongchang, a professor of economics and management at Beijing Jiaotong University. "The deeper cause lies in maintenance, management and even in whether contracts were awarded in a fair and open way in the first place."

Staff at Casco's headquarters refused comment Wednesday.

CRSC had declared August a "signaling quality" month, deploying engineers to inspect projects and reduce risks, it said in an announcement on its website.

Alstom has 10,000 employees in China, where it has been supplying trains and equipment to China for over 50 years. Its Urbalis signaling system, the one being used on Line 10, is used on at least seven subway lines in China, including several in Beijing, three in Shanghai and one in Shenzhen, according to a company press release.

China's multi-trillion dollar building boom is knitting the country together as never before, with high-speed trains, smooth new super highways, cruise terminals and brand new airports.

But many of the projects, built at hyper speed to meet deadlines that often appear geared more to political grandstanding than safety, have fallen prey to quality and safety problems.

"Given the serious traffic jam problems in big cities like Beijing and Shanghai, generally it is better to have more subways and have them earlier," said Li, the professor.

"But the rush is too hot in some places, too many subways built too quickly," Li said. Construction often starts before projects are fully designed to save time, he said.

The momentum to build quickly and massively is built into a system dominated by state-owned companies whose party-appointed top executives often enjoy insider influence with the officials awarding contracts.

CRSC, for example, is among the many big state companies that have thrived on China's massive railways buildup, further fortified by huge cash pools from share listings. Most of the company's overseas projects, according to its website, have been in the developing world ? North Korea, Pakistan, Iran and Tanzania ? or at home.

The subway crash was a shock for Shanghai, a city of 23 million that prides itself on its fancy new infrastructure ? roads, airports, ports, tunnels and subways all expanded dramatically ahead of the city's 2010 World Expo.

But as with elsewhere in China, the cracks in the veneer already were showing, just like the recent reports of shattering glass and crumbling concrete at the city's new Hongqiao International Airport terminal.

Tuesday's was the third system failure in two months on the subway's "Line 10", which reportedly was set to switch to completely automated operations next month, eliminating the need for train attendants to drive or operate the doors of the trains.

Such high-tech features are worlds away from the long bicycle and bus commutes of the past. But they are not always worth it, said Zhang Xide, an economics professor at the Chinese Academy of Governance.

"Infrastructure investment is irreversible," Zhang said. "If something goes wrong, the cost is high."

The Oddest SUVs Ever Built

 The Oddest SUVs Ever Built

With a lineage dating back to the original rough-and-tumble World War II military Jeep, the sport-utility vehicle market shows no signs of retreating, even if most models have gone soft in the guise of car-based crossovers. With Maserati and Bentley recently announcing their intentions to sell luxury SUVs of their own, that would leave a mere smattering of brands like Ferrari, Jaguar and Rolls-Royce among the few makes not to show some skin in this market segment.

Of course mere entry into the sport-utility vehicle business is no guarantee of success. Automotive history is scattered with the remains of some truly oddball models, most of which came to market riding the SUV tsunami that crested in the 1990?s. And that?s not including current strange-but-true entries like the Nissan Murano CrossCabriolet convertible, the creepily militaristic Mercedes-Benz G-Class or the curiously fish-shaped BMW X6 and Acura ZDX fastback models.

We?ll give a gracious pass to elemental, but crude, entries like the redoubtable International Harvester Scout that was perhaps 20 years ahead of the curve conceptually, but was plagued by a heritage of farm-equipment technology. Likewise, we?re look the other way regarding mechanical misses like the scurrilous Suzuki Samurai, tinny Ford Bronco II or the chunky Isuzu Amigo. And the less said about anomalies like the AM General-built right-hand-drive Jeep DJ postal vehicle that inevitably found its way into consumers hands via government auctions, the better.

We?re talking about true eccentricities of the automotive universe that, for the most part, came and went without nary a whimper. to that end the accompanying slide show takes a not-so-fond look at what we?ve identified as being 10 of the oddest SUVs ever to hit the pavement.

Click here for the full list and gallery: 10 Oddest SUVs.

You?ll still see some of those bygone models parked along the side of the road on occasion, like the over-styled Isuzu VehiCROSS and Pontiac Aztek, the truly strange Suzuki X-90 and the appropriately named Volkswagen thing. some of them were initially sold in such small numbers they?ve since become all but extinct, like the short-lived Laforza, Lamborghini LM002 and GMC Typhoon. And then there?s the original Hummer H1 that took on Saddam Hussein in Operation Desert Storm and returned home to eventually spawn an entire line of failed models and become the poster child for vehicular largess.

Lock the transmission in low gear, head for the hills and click over to the full slide show to get the dirt on some past ? and current ? oddball SUVs.

During this short review you may browse why laser hair removal systems shouldn?t be used for moles removals, and why that will even be terribly dangerous to do.

Moles will be a Cosmetic downside
Moles, warts and skin tags are a nasty aesthetic downside. Not most are as stunning as Cyndy Crawford along with her horny mole over the higher lip. For many ladies having facial moles and skin tags could be a cosmetic downside, because the moles and skin tags are dark skin bumps, with whiskers and when there are too several of them, they will be quite embarrassing.
Bikini Hair Removal

Can you chuck them?
One way of treatment is also to be told to measure in peace along with your facial moles and skin tags, (beauty spots?) since they?re not aiming to disappear if you are doing not take action, you?ll simply likewise ?become friends? with them, and settle for them as they?re.

Another possibility that is way a lot of popular? Is to seek out ways that to induce rid of your facial moles warts and skin tags.

Laser Treatments for Moles Removal
Many examine laser treatments for moles and warts removal, and mistakenly assume it?s an equivalent laser used for hair removal, however that?s WRONG.

Warts and moles laser removal could be a special quite laser that has the flexibility to burn off veins and stop the blood provide to the mole. Once the blood provides to the mole or skin tag is stop and terminated, the mole can fall off.

Laser Hair Removal on Moles = Scarring
Laser hair removal could be a completely different quite laser, and has different wavelength and different lightweight emitted. The sunshine} from the laser is absorbed by the hair?s dark colour and therefore the laser lightweight transforms into heat! The dark mole skin may very well get scarred in a very Millie-second. Flesh burns could occur too. The last item you would like is to exchange the ?beauty spots? moles into deep scars.

Get Rid Of Moles and Warts Safely
Instead of improvising a laser medical procedure, you?ll higher do it the proper method. The primary possibility is to visualize if your insurance covers mole removal treatments, because it is also a cosmetic surgery and a few insurance corporations don?t cowl cosmetic procedures.

Go to a skin doctor, dermatologist to visualize your skin moles and tags, a number of them will change into cancer melanoma, the dermatologist is aware of what to appear ? If any mole changes in size, bleeds, develop irregular edges, or completely different colours.

Get rid of moles warts and skin tags while not surgery, there are natural remedies that promise that you just can lose moles and warts. Because the warts are connected to infections some remedies will truly defeat these infections and solve half (or whole) of your downside.

'Octomom' Suleman selling California home (AP)

LA HABRA, Calif. ? The Southern California home where "Octomom" Nadya Suleman has lived for more than two years is for sale.

A real estate website says the 2,583-square-foot home on Madonna Lane is listed at $525,000.

The Orange County Register ( http://bit.ly/rq765j) reported the listing Monday.

Suleman's father Ed Doud purchased the home in 2009 for $565,000. Suleman owes a $450,000 balloon payment to Amer Haddadin, the note holder on the home. He had threatened Suleman with eviction several times over the past several months if she didn't pay the money.

Haddadin told the Register he has been trying to convince Suleman to sell the house all summer and had no idea that a sign had been put up in the front yard.

Agent Rebecca Mercado says the home was listed on Friday.

Calls rise for global focus on creating jobs (AP)

PARIS ? World governments must not let their focus on spending cuts keep them from creating jobs that will be a key part of economic recovery, an international group of experts warned on Monday.

The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development and the International Labor Organization say government support for the unemployed ? both with subsidies and job training ? is vital since long-term joblessness is particularly intractable.

The employment ministers of the Group of 20 leading economies were meeting Monday and Tuesday in Paris to discuss the situation. But the agencies' call to spend more money ? even on job creation ? could have difficulty gaining traction in the current climate of budget cuts.

Many countries, especially in Europe, are being forced to slash their budgets to win back the confidence of investors, who are concerned that deficits and debts are out of control. Greece, for example, is teetering on the brink of default because it can't afford to pay its bills while also paying down its debts.

Public sector payrolls have been slashed savagely and economic uncertainty is keeping businesses from hiring.

Maurizio Sacconi, Italy's labor minister, said at Monday's meeting that governments have to "stimulate growth with employment because we are aware of the danger of a jobless recovery, of jobless growth."

The bind the most indebted countries like Greece find themselves in is that they have little or no money to spend. They need to cut costs or raise taxes or both to pay down debts, but will never pay them down sufficiently if growth doesn't increase.

But as the global economic slowdown intensifies, unemployment has risen on governments' lists of concerns.

Currently, 200 million people are out of work worldwide ? a figure that approaches the worst depths of the recession ? according to the ILO and the OECD, the Paris-based watchdog for the world's most developed economies.

The two groups say slow growth since the 2008 crisis has resulted in a shortfall of 20 million jobs in the G-20 countries. If average employment growth slips just two-tenths of a percentage point more ? to 0.8 percent ? that figure could grow to 40 million by 2015.

By contrast, those economies taken together would need an average of 1.3 percent employment growth over the next three years to absorb that 20 million.

"This is the human face of the crisis," the heads of the two organizations said in a letter to the G-20 employment ministers on Monday. "Governments cannot ignore it."

The ministers are expected to release a statement laying out their commitments at the end of their meeting on Tuesday.

The economic figures ? and the sometimes violent protests by people resisting cuts ? are beginning to change government priorities. Politicians in several countries, including Greece and Spain ? with 16 and 21 percent unemployment, respectively ? are agitating for an increased focus on job-creation.

French President Nicolas Sarkozy emphasized in a speech later Monday that employment "must be at the heart of our priorities."

However, he added, fundamental rights must be respected in G20 countries.

"Protection for the weakest must be an imperative," the French president said, adding that G20 nations who also are members of the International Labor Organization should ratify the eight ILO conventions on fundamental rights that notably forbid child labor and call for gender equality.

Sarkozy said he would like to see the ILO gain observer status at the World Trade Organization.

How to create jobs is a topic of much debate. Some say governments should steer clear of spending money to boost employment but only create a good climate for businesses.

"That means reduce the regulatory pressure, the fiscal pressure that weighs on companies in terms of hiring," said Marc Touati, the chief economist at investment company Assya. It's not a just a matter of cutting spending, he said, but also rethinking spending.

The OECD and ILO insist that while austerity may be necessary, governments have a role in creating jobs.

"For those countries where there is some fiscal space, our message will be, use it," Stefano Scarpetta, the leading employment expert at the OECD, told reporters on Monday. "For those countries where the fiscal space is very limited, try to create this fiscal space."

He conceded that countries do need to reduce their budgets, but said money must be found to give businesses the confidence to hire. He praised in particular to the Obama administration's plan to cut payroll taxes for employers who take on new workers.

Without those incentives, he said that even companies in good financial standing would stay on the sidelines, waiting to see if the economy is starting to grow before hiring.

The danger is that a vicious cycle might ensue. The economy won't grow in a meaningful way until hiring picks up, but hiring is unlikely to pick up until employers feel the economy is going to start growing.

Scarpetta says the G-20 has to find a way to give businesses that confidence.

"Our concerns about the labor market situation have, if anything, become even more serious" in recent weeks, said Scarpetta.

Croatia ruling party vows investment, no new taxes

Croatia?s Prime Minister Jadranka Kosor kicks off the ruling centre-right HDZ party?s campaign for the upcoming December parliamentary elections in Zagreb Sept 27, 2011. [Photo/Agencies]?

ZAGREB ? Croatia?s ruling conservativj HDZ party vowed on Tuesday to boost investment and jobs and keep a lid on spending and taxes if it wins the Dec 4 parliamentary election.

The HDZ, which has been in power for the past eight years, is trailing a centre-left opposition coalition in opinion polls in the former Yugoslav republic which concluded EU membership talks this year.

Stratford Career Institute Offering Enhanced Physical Therapy Aide Course

Scranton, PA (PRWEB) September 27, 2011

Just in time for back to school season, distance learning school Stratford Career Institute has updated one of their increasingly popular courses, Physical Therapy Aide.
Through the addition of a new textbook and modified study guides, students enrolled in this course will now have access to more than 150 new photographs to help illustrate a variety of clinical skills and physical therapy modalities.

Fundamental lessons on patient preparation and medical terminology are covered, and the course includes a broad range of non-medical tasks and skills related to a successful physical therapy aide career...

The latest survey, published on Monday night, gave the HDZ some 20 percent of the vote, compared to 37 percent for the Alliance for Change, led by the Social Democrats. but Prime Minister Jadranka Kosor said she was convinced the HDZ would win a third four-year mandate.

?There will be no new taxes. we want to position Croatia as an investment destination. we will show fiscal responsibility and halve the deficit by the end of 2013,? Kosor told a news conference.

This year?s budget deficit was set at 4.9 percent of gross domestic product.

Kosor pledged new investment in tourism, infrastructure and energy projects ? almost identical to the opposition?s plans, presented in early September.

?What we don?t want is new taxes, pension cuts, corruption, liquidity problems. also, we will not privatise our natural resources,? she said.

The centre-left opposition wants to ease the tax burden on labour, but wants to compensate by introducing taxes on property and capital.

Croatia, which completed EU entry talks in June and hopes to join the block in July 2013, suffered two recession years in a row. This year, most analysts forecast one percent growth at best.

Croatia?s growth before the crisis relied mostly on summer tourism, state investments and consumer spending, but analysts say the country must now turn to boosting production and exports, both of which have stagnated since the country gained independence from Yugoslavia in 1991.??

Twitter changes course of 'The Amazing Race'

By Ree Hines

On Sunday night, the Emmy-winning ?Amazing Race? kicked off the 19th season of its round-the-world reality TV competition, and thanks to an unexpected Twitter twist, two of the newest players are still in it to win it.

At first it seemed the race was over before it even began for Kaylani and Lisa. After all, Kaylani committed the very worst offense a globetrotter could ? losing her passport before leaving the country. But rather than face disqualification, the pair benefited from the kindness of strangers with Twitter accounts.

First, Ryan Storms spotted the missing passport and tweeted the details.

?So #Thelife gets crazier,? he wrote. ?So after being randomly filmed for ?The Amazing Race,? I see that one of them dropped (their) passport!!!?

Then, when another ?Amazing Race? fan read the tweet, she urged the man to race to the airport himself and hand over the passport so the?women could stay in the race. That?s just what he did.

It was a lucky break for the two contestants, but before the episode was over, everyone had a lucky break. As it turned out, the first leg of the race was a non-elimination leg.

Were you surprised by the help the racers received? Do you think fans should be able to interfere with the show? Share your thoughts on our Facebook page.

Lowe pounded again, Braves routed by Phillies 7-1 (AP)

ATLANTA ? Dan Uggla drop-kicked his bat after striking out on three pitches. Chipper Jones slammed his bat into the dirt after popping up. Derek Lowe just trudged off the mound to another round of boos from the home crowd, wondering how it all went wrong.

The Braves are mad and frustrated heading to the 162nd game.

Their season is on the brink after a potentially historic collapse.

"It's like living out a bad dream," Jones said.

Lowe had another miserable outing, surrendering five runs in four-plus innings, and the Braves took another step toward giving away a playoff berth that seemed certain just a few weeks ago with an ugly 7-1 loss to the Philadelphia Phillies on Tuesday night.

St. Louis pulled even with the Braves, rallying from an early 5-0 deficit to beat the Houston Astros 13-6. Atlanta took sole possession of the NL wild-card lead on June 20 and had held it until Tuesday, according to STATS LLC.

Chase Utley, Hunter Pence and Jimmy Rollins homered to back a three-hit outing by Roy Oswalt (9-10), who tuned up for the playoffs with a strong performance in a largely disappointing season.

Talk about disappointing. Look what's happened to the Braves.

They lost their fourth in a row and eighth in 11 games, sending them to the final day of the regular season tied with the Cardinals. Atlanta had an 8 1/2-game lead just three weeks ago.

"We've got one game to play in the month of September, then October comes around and it's a new month," Braves manager Fredi Gonzalez said. "There's not a person in that locker room who I wouldn't want to be on my team to play that game."

"I would hope so," Jones said, trying to make light of the grim situation. "We're pretty much all he has anyway."

Sixteen-game winner Tim Hudson will try to wrap up the wild card or at least force a one-game playoff against Cardinals, which would be Thursday night in St. Louis.

"It is what it is," Gonzalez said. "We've played 161 games and it comes down to one. We've done it to ourselves. No excuses there. We've got to go get it tomorrow."

Lowe (9-17) has been a $15 million bust for the Braves, losing all five of his September starts and drawing the ire of Atlanta fans. They cheered lustily when Gonzalez popped out of the dugout to make a pitching change after Lowe gave up a leadoff single in the fifth, then heckled the high-priced right-hander as he trudged to the dugout ? and straight to the showers without so much as a pause.

"When you're 9-17 with a (5.05) ERA, come on, there's really nothing you can say to sugarcoat it," Lowe said. "I'm man enough to say I've had a terrible year. But we've still got a chance. Our best pitcher is going tomorrow. This isn't about me. This is about this organization and how much hard work these guys have put in this season."

The NL East champion Phillies, winning their 101st game of the season, jumped ahead on the eighth pitch of the game. Lowe served up one to Utley, who drove it into center-field seats for his 11th homer.

An uneasy feeling settled over Turner Field. It would only get worse.

The Phillies extended the lead to 3-0 in the third on Rollins' run-scoring and Pence's sacrifice fly, the inning helped along by Lowe's ill-advised decision to try to get the lead runner at third on Oswalt's sacrifice. Carlos Ruiz beat the throw and everyone was safe.

The advantage grew to 4-0 in the fourth when two singles set up another sacrifice fly, this one by Placido Polanco.

Philadelphia finished off Lowe in the fifth. When Rollins led off with a single, rookie Arodys Vizcaino was summoned from the bullpen. But the youngster gave up a towering two-run homer to Pence, his 22nd, that turned the game into a full-fledged rout.

Rollins added his 16th homer in the seventh off another Braves rookie, Julio Teheran.

The Braves fans stopped booing long enough to cheer on the last-place Astros from afar, breaking into periodic chants of "Let's Go Houston!"

"I heard it," said Braves center fielder Michael Bourn, who was acquired from the Astros at the trade deadline. "I was actually bobbing my head to it. I'm right there with 'em. Let's go Astros. You can't be against that."

The top three hitters in the Phillies' lineup ? Rollins, Utley and Pence ? combined to go 6 for 12 with three homers, five RBIs and four runs scored. Rollins had three hits and Pence drove in three runs.

Manager Charlie Manuel improved his record in Philadelphia to 645-488, tying Gene Mauch (645-684) for the most wins in franchise history.

"I'll get more out of it when I beat him," Manuel joked. "That's a good sign of the teams we've had."

No one in the Atlanta lineup did anything until Martin Prado hit a meaningless homer off Kyle Kendrick in the ninth to keep the Braves from their second shutout in four games. They've scored only four runs in that span.

Staked to a comfortable lead, Oswalt went on cruise control. The right-hander went six innings and allowed just two runners to get as far as second base. His only real trouble came in the third when Bourn singled, stole second and Prado reached as Rollins bobbled a grounder at shortstop for an error. But Jones, who had an MRI on his ailing right knee before the game, grounded into a double play.

"My arm's strength back," Oswalt said. "My breaking pitch was working pretty well. Hopefully, it'll carry into the playoffs."

Jones and the Braves just want to make it to the playoffs. "You never expect this to happen to you," he said.

NOTES: The Phillies won their third in a row and improved to 11-6 against the Braves in the season series. ... RHP Jair Jurrjens is scheduled to pitch Thursday in the Florida instructional league in what the Braves are hoping will be a tuneup for the playoffs. He's been out with a bone bruise in his right knee. ... The Braves had hoped to save Hudson (16-10) for the playoffs, but their No. 1 starter has to go Wednesday with the season on the line. Joe Blanton (1-2) gets the nod for the Phillies, who also plan to use starter Cole Hamels for a couple of innings in relief, as well as a series of relievers. ... Braves SS Alex Gonzalez left the game in the second inning after re-injuring his strained right calf. Fredi Gonzalez said the injury appears more serious than before and he doesn't expect his starter to play on Wednesday. Jack Wilson would fill in.

Monday, September 26, 2011

An accidental discovery in a physicist's laboratory at the University of California, Riverside provides a unique route for tuning the electrical properties of graphene, nature's thinnest elastic material. This route holds great promise for replacing silicon with graphene in the microchip industry.

The researchers found that stacking up three layers of graphene, like pancakes, significantly modifies the material's electrical properties. When they fabricated trilayer graphene in the lab and measured its conductance, they found, to their surprise, that depending on how the layers were stacked some of the trilayer graphene devices were conducting while others were insulating.

"What we stumbled upon is a simple and convenient 'knob' for tuning graphene sheets' electrical properties," said Jeanie Lau, an associate professor of physics and astronomy, whose lab made the serendipitous finding.

Study results appeared online Sept. 25 in Nature Physics.

Graphene is a one-atom thick sheet of carbon atoms arranged in hexagonal rings. Bearing excellent material properties, such as high current-carrying capacity and thermal conductivity, this "wonder material" is ideally suited for creating components for semiconductor circuits and computers.

Because of the planar and chicken wire-like structure of graphene, its sheets lend themselves well to stacking in what is called 'Bernal stacking,' the stacking fashion of graphene sheets.

In a Bernal-stacked bilayer, one corner of the hexagons of the second sheet is located above the center of the hexagons of the bottom sheet. In Bernal-stacked trilayer (ABA), the top (third) sheet is exactly on top of the lowest sheet. In rhombohedral-stacked (ABC) trilayer, the top sheet is shifted by the distance of an atom, so that the top (third) sheet and the lowest sheet form a Bernal stacking as well.

"The most stable form of trilayer graphene is ABA, which behaves like a metal," Lau explained. "Amazingly, if we simply shift the entire topmost layer by the distance of a single atom, the trilayer ? now with ABC or rhombohedral stacking ? becomes insulating. Why this happens is not clear as yet. It could be induced by electronic interactions. We eagerly await an explanation from theorists!"

Her lab used Raman spectroscopy to examine the graphene devices' stacking orders. Next the lab plans to investigate the nature of the insulating state in ABC-stacked graphene. In this kind of stacked graphene, they also plan to study the band gap ? a range in energy, critical for digital applications, in which no electrons can exist.

"The presence of the gap in ABC-stacked graphene that arises, we believe, from enhanced electronic interactions is interesting since it is not expected from theoretical calculations," Lau said. "Understanding this gap is particularly important for the major challenge of band gap engineering in graphene electronics."

Besides graphene, Lau studies nanowires and carbon nanotubes. Her research has helped physicists gain fundamental understanding of how atoms and electrons behave when they are ruled by quantum mechanics. Her lab studies novel electrical properties that arise from the quantum confinement of atoms and charges to nanoscale systems. Her research team has shown that graphene can act as an atomic-scale billiard table, with electric charges acting as billiard balls.

Her other research interests include superconductivity, thermal management and electronic transport in nanostructures, and engineering new classes of nanoscale devices.

An educational component of Lau's research effort is the active involvement of high school, undergraduate, and graduate students, especially minority and women, in her cutting-edge research, taking advantage of the ethnic diversity of UCR's student population and local communities. She is a founding faculty member of the UCR Undergraduate Research Journal. She also organized a "Women in Physics" lunch group that provides a friendly platform for female students, postdocs and faculty members to interact.

After receiving her bachelor's degree in physics from the University of Chicago in 1994, Lau proceeded to Harvard University from where she received her master's and doctoral degrees in physics in 1997 and 2001, respectively. She joined UCR in 2004, after an appointment as a research associate in the Hewlett-Packard Laboratory.

Lau's awards and honors include a Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers, 2009; a National Science Foundation CAREER Award, 2008; the Richter Fellowship for Undergraduate Research, 1992; a David W. Grainger Senior Scholarship, 1993; and a Robert T. Poe Faculty Development Grant from the Chinese-American Faculty Association of Southern California, 2007. She has published more than 60 research articles in peer-reviewed journals.

Lau, a member of UCR's Center for Nanoscale Science and Engineering, was joined in the research by W. Bao (the first author of the research paper), L. Jing, J. Velasco Jr., Y. Lee, G. Liu, D. Tran and M. Bockrath at UCR; B. Stanley at Caltech; M. Aykol and S. B. Cronin at the University of Southern California; D. Smirnov at the National High Magnetic Field Laboratory, Fla.; M. Koshino at Tohoku University, Japan; and E. McCann at Lancaster University, United Kingdom.

Tips to Remember When Looking for Outdoor Camping Tents

When it comes to enjoying the great outdoors, you will find that there is one piece of camping gear that will be more important than the rest: your tent. Outdoor camping tents are the most important piece of equipment that you will need to go camping. Think about it: you can cook over an open fire, you can scrounge for food, and you can even use leaves as toilet paper, but it's not the same if you are sleeping out under the open stars or a heavy rain.

Choosing your tent will make or break your camping trip, and it is important that you choose the best quality camping tents when planning your outdoor adventure. If you choose the right tent, you will be able to sleep in peace, comfort, and total luxury. If you choose the wrong tent, you may find that it will blow away, be difficult to erect, be too cramped for all of you, or even leak. The best quality camping tents should be the only ones you buy, as only the quality outdoor camping tents will put up with the wear and tear of camping life.

Here are some things to remember when looking for outdoor camping tents:

  • The size of your tent is one of the most important factors to consider. If you are one person camping alone, you will require a much smaller tent than 4 people sleeping together. If your tent is too big, that will not be much of a problem. A tent that is too small, however, will be uncomfortable and cramped. Choose a tent that will accommodate all of the camping party comfortably, and you may find that getting a bigger tent than you need can actually make the trip more comfortable.
  • The material used for the tent is another important factor to take into account. Obviously the tent will be made from a synthetic material, but you should also consider the quality of the material that you will purchase. The stronger the nylon used for the tent, the more likely it will be to put up with the abuse of a number of people going in and out of a tent on a camping trip.
  • If you are driving to your destination, you will find that any camping tent will suffice. However, hiking to your camping place will mean that your tent will need to be lightweight, as carrying around a heavy tent is exhausting. Consider whether you will be hiking, backpacking, walking, or simply driving to your camping spot, as that can help you purchase a tent that will be the right weight.

These three things are the most important things to consider, and you will find that there are many brands of outdoor camping tents that will meet your expectations and be excellent quality. As long as you consider these things, you will find that your outdoor camping tents will be comfortable when you are on a long camping trip.?

Hunter's TD rallies 49ers over Bengals 13-8

Alex Smith

By JOE KAY

updated 4:27 p.m. ET Sept. 25, 2011

CINCINNATI - One game in, the San Francisco 49ers' trip is already worth writing home about.

Kendall Hunter ran 7 yards for the game's only touchdown with 3:59 to go Sunday, rallying the 49ers to a 13-8 victory in front of the Cincinnati Bengals' smallest crowd for a home opener in 30 years.

Hunter's run completed the only noteworthy drive by the 49ers (2-1), who didn't even cross midfield until midway through the third quarter.

Cincinnati (1-2) was limited to a pair of field goals by Mike Nugent during rookie quarterback Andy Dalton's first dismal performance. He threw two interceptions in the fourth quarter, the first of his career.

There were only 43,363 fans at 65,500-seat Paul Brown Stadium, the Bengals' smallest crowd for a home opener since they played at Riverfront Stadium in 1981.

The 49ers sent them heading for the exits when Reggie Smith intercepted Dalton's forced throw with 1:45 left.

David Akers kicked three field goals for San Francisco, including a 53-yarder after Dalton's first interception, pushing the lead to 13-6. After Smith intercepted Dalton again with 1:45 to go, punter Andy Lee ran out of the end zone for a safety to finish it off with 2 seconds left.

It was a satisfying start to the 49ers' weeklong stay in the Buckeye State. They'll practice at Youngstown State the next few days, then head to Philadelphia for their next game.

An ugly arrival ended with Alex Smith's only good moments. He led a 10-play, 72-yard drive, hitting tight end Vernon Davis with a 20-yard pass on a misdirection play to set up the winning touchdown.

Until the closing minutes, it appeared the 49ers had forgotten to pack their West Coast offense. Ugliness abounded.

Running back Frank Gore fumbled to set up Cincinnati's field goal for a 6-3 lead in the fourth quarter. He also had a pass hit him in the facemask. Referee Jerome Boger said one 49ers false-start penalty was on "the entire offensive line."

The late drive saved them. Smith was under constant pressure and finished 20 of 30 overall for 201 yards and five sacks. The 49ers blunted drives with penalties, and Kevin Huber's punts pinned them at their own 10, 11, 12, 14 and 17, leaving too much ground for one of the NFL's least-productive offenses to cover.

Also, the 49ers were missing receiver Braylon Edwards, who hurt his right knee during an overtime loss to Dallas last Sunday.

The Bengals were at full-strength after deciding to let receiver Jerome Simpson play. He missed two days of practice because he's the focus of an investigation into a drug shipment to his home. He got into the game on the opening series and finished with only one catch for 6 yards.

Dalton had passer ratings above 100 in his first two starts, but repeatedly forced throws against the 49ers' defense. He went 17 of 32 for 157 yards and a rating of 40.8.

Global crisis: Is China's economy in trouble too? | Zaykar Global ...

HONG KONG ? Is China?s economy in trouble, too? As the U.S. economy appears to teeter on the edge of another recession, Europe struggles with a financial crisis and emerging markets like Brazil and India show new weaknesses, China might appear to be in better shape than most countries, economists say. But ?better? is relative.

On the surface, economists at the International Monetary Fund and most banks are still estimating China?s growth rate to be more than 9 percent this year. China continues to run very large trade surpluses. New construction starts have soared with a government campaign to provide more affordable housing.

And yet, the country?s huge manufacturing sector is starting to slow and orders are weakening, especially for exports. The real estate bubble is starting to spring leaks, even as inflation remains stubbornly high for consumers ? despite a series of interest rate increases and ever-tighter limits on bank lending.

Because China?s mighty growth engine has been one of the few drivers of the global economy since the financial crisis of 2008, signs of deceleration could add to worries about the global outlook.

A survey of Chinese purchasing managers, just completed by HSBC and Markit Economics, shows a third consecutive month of contraction in the manufacturing sector. The release of the survey results Thursday contributed to a global slide in stock markets that day.

Meanwhile, huge loans that Chinese banks have made to state-owned enterprises and local governments over the past three years could cause trouble if the economy does slow.

What?s more, there are further signs of trade hostilities from Washington, where the impulse is to blame China?s cheap exports, at least partly, for the U.S.? continued high unemployment. On Thursday, a bipartisan group of senators announced that they would pursue legislation requiring the Obama administration to confront China more directly on currency policy. They want the White House to push harder for China to allow its currency, the renminbi, to appreciate.

If China does allow its currency to rise more quickly and if its trade surplus narrows, that could help economies elsewhere. But too much of a slowdown in China could simply add to the world?s financial gloom.

Chinese exporters are particularly worried. Nicole Huang, the sales manager at Dongguan Lianyi Sport Goods Co. Ltd., a maker of beer coolers, diving suits and other products in the industrial hub city of Dongguan, said the number of orders had dropped 5 percent so far this year, and the average size of each order had also begun to shrink.

And instead of the labor shortages that plagued many manufacturers last year as workers sought better jobs elsewhere, more people now seem willing to accept assembly-line tedium. Short term, that could help exporters. But it could be an early sign of looming unemployment problems.

It allows you to create a face for your brand and will ultimately help your business grow.

If the financial aspect of bringing in a professional team to create your online video is what has you questioning its necessity, think of it as a lucrative investment?but you don?t necessarily have to break the bank. Your video?s efficacy, however, relies on involving people who provide services that will deliver exactly what your company needs to become a leader in your industry. You want your finished product to exemplify everything your business has to offer and compel your target audience to give their business to YOU. Online video gives you the opportunity to reach beyond your local community, while maintaining the sense of personal interaction. You can establish your product or brand, the services you offer, and your professional objective. You can address universal issues that potential customers can identify with and demonstrate the solutions you can provide. You can include current client testimonials to represent your credibility and success. Most importantly, you can highlight why one should choose you and your business over your competitors. Heavier kids experience more social problems (Reuters)

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) ? Children who are heavier than their peers at ages four and five are more likely to struggle in their relationships with other kids several years later, an Australian study suggests.

After following more than 3,300 children for about four years, researchers found that the heavy kids were up to 20 percent more likely at age eight or nine to be described by their parents as having social difficulties and by teachers as having emotional problems.

"It's interesting that we're seeing these problems at an early age," said Christina Calamaro, a professor at the University of Maryland School of Nursing, who did not participate in the research.

"I think this speaks to the fact that health care providers need to take weight into consideration at an earlier age, so we can cut it off at the pass before they hit middle school," she told Reuters Health.

The researchers surveyed the parents and teachers of 3,363 Australian children participating in a large national health study. The interviews were conducted first when the kids were four or five, and again four years later.

The questions involved measures of children's mental and behavioral health, such as emotional problems, hyperactivity and social skills.

Children also had their weight and height checked at each age.

At ages four and five, 222 boys (13 percent) and 264 girls (16 percent) were determined to be overweight, while 77 boys (4.5 percent) and 87 girls (5.2 percent) were obese.

Those kids with a body mass index (BMI -- a measure of weight relative to height) at least 1.6 points greater than their normal-weight peers at a young age were more at risk of having social problems, including isolation or teasing, later on.

For a five year old boy who is 40 inches tall and 40 pounds, for instance, a 1.6-point increase in BMI would translate into a weight gain of about two pounds.

At ages eight and nine, the heavier kids were 15 percent more likely to receive an evaluation of "concerning," based on parents' and teachers' responses about social interactions with peers. The heavy kids were also 20 percent more likely to get a "concerning" score from teachers on emotional development.

Lead author Michael Sawyer, a professor at the University of Adelaide, said it's important to evaluate children's social life in grade school because this is the age at which it starts to increase in importance.

"The quality of peer relationships during this period of time has the potential to have a significant impact on children's later mental health," Sawyer wrote in an email to Reuters Health.

In the study, published in the journal Pediatrics, the authors write that the stigma of being overweight can translate into social struggles for these children, and the kids might withdraw themselves from social activities because they fear teasing.

Obese children are more likely to be bullied (see Reuters Health story of May 3, 2010).

Sawyer's group did not find any differences between the heavy kids and the normal weight kids in their risk of mental health problems, such as hyperactivity or conduct disorders.

Other studies have found that later in life, however, obesity puts adults at greater risk of developing a mental illness like depression or anxiety.

Sawyer said he'd like to continue following the children to see whether the social problems his study revealed might be precursors to later mental health problems.
