I can remember back in the late-1980s when driving a Hyundai was the epitome of un-cool. Well, things have certainly changed since then. Now, Hyundai?s are known for their style, quality, and affordability ? and even for being, dare I say it, ?cool.?

This is a development not lost on U.S. auto giants Ford (NYSE:F) and General Motors (NYSE:GM), or on the Japanese automakers Honda (NYSE:HMC) and Toyota (NYSE:TM). Even German behemoth Volkswagen AG (PINK:VLKAY) is likely watching Hyundai?s remarkable progress, and well it should.

Through the first half of 2012, Hyundai Group?s U.S. market share ? which includes Kia-brand vehicles ? held steady vs. the prior year?s six months. The company captured 8.87% of the market midway through 2012, down slightly from the 8.97% it garnered through the first six months of 2011. By comparison, the much larger Ford and GM saw their respective market share fall in the first half of the year, with Ford?s share sliding 1.21% to 15.68%, and GM?s share declining 1.83% to 18.09%. Hyundai also bested rival Nissan (PINK:NSANY) in market share, as well as Volkswagen.

Earlier this year, John Krafcik, chief executive officer of Hyundai Motor America, announced that the company aims to increase its U.S. sales to 700,000 cars and sport-utility vehicles this year, which is a roughly 8% increase over the prior year. Once Hyundai settles the disputes and gets back on track with full production, the race with U.S., Japanese and German automakers will resume.

The long-term implications of Hyundai?s drive into the lead pack of top-selling automakers in the U.S. sales means an increasingly competitive marketplace for the likes of Ford and GM. It also means that to stay competitive, these companies likely will have to offer more discounts on more models, which will take an increasing bite out of profit margins.

To combat the loss of U.S. market share, Ford and particularly GM will have to search for market share outside the states. The only problem is that Europe is mired in recession, and the other big market, China, is having its own struggles with economic growth.

To be certain, the U.S. auto market is where it?s at for car makers, and any company making gains here at home is liable to cause an uncomfortable stir for those currently in the top spot. Tymoshenko loses appeal, stays in Ukraine jail

KIEV (Reuters) - A Ukrainian high court rejected an appeal on Wednesday by former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko against her conviction for abuse of office, leaving her in jail and Ukraine's relations with the West severely strained.

Tymoshenko's defense lawyer said the ruling by a three-judge panel had been steered by President Viktor Yanukovich for political reasons.

"These findings have no relation to justice," Serhiy Vlasenko told journalists after judge Olexander Yelfimov ruled that lower courts had delivered "correct decisions on the crimes of Tymoshenko."

"This is a decision of Yanukovich to keep Tymoshenko in prison," Vlasenko said.

Western leaders condemned the seven-year prison term meted out to the 51-year-old opposition leader in October as political persecution, and blocked strategic agreements on political association and a free-trade zone with the European Union.

But despite months of chiding by the European Union and the United States, Yanukovich has refused to act to secure her release. No one had expected her to be released on Wednesday.

Yanukovich did not immediately react to Vlasenko's comments, though in tough remarks last Friday he said he would not negotiate integration with the European Union at the price of allowing it to interfere in her case.

In Brussels, the European Union urged Ukraine to reform its judicial system "to redress the effects of selective justice" like that seen in Tymoshenko's case.

"We stress the importance for the Ukrainian authorities to take concrete steps to address the systemic problems of the judiciary," Michael Mann, a spokesman for EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton, said.

Tymoshenko, recognizable for her peasant-style hair braid and known for fiery rhetoric, was not in court because of persistent back trouble which has kept her confined to a state-run hospital in eastern Ukraine.

About 300 of her supporters gathered outside the courtroom, chanting slogans such as "Yulia - Freedom!" and "Keep convicts inside and get Yulia out!" They lowered a mock coffin into the ground outside the courtroom to symbolize the death of justice.

The continued incarceration of Tymoshenko - by far the most vibrant opposition figure on Ukraine's political landscape - is certain to figure as a major issue in an October 28 legislative election.

Yanukovich's Party of the Regions goes into that election with the government highly unpopular over reforms that have increased taxes on small businesses and raised retirement ages, and it will have to work hard to retain its majority.

The abuse of office conviction relates to a gas deal that Tymoshenko brokered with Russia in 2009 when she was prime minister. The Yanukovich government says the agreement was reckless and saddled Ukraine with an enormous price for strategic supplies of gas which is taking a toll on the stressed economy.

"SHAMEFUL"

Tymoshenko has denied betraying the national interest, with her lawyers arguing that the gas negotiation with Russia was a political act which did not amount to a criminal action.

Ukrainian state prosecutors said Tymoshenko's guilt was clearly established at her trial last year.

In Wednesday's judgment, the three-member panel said: "The judges of the court have reached the conclusion that the appeal cannot be satisfied ... The judges believe that the previous courts reached correct decisions on the crimes of Tymoshenko."

Tymoshenko's daughter Yevgenia, who has sought international support for her mother's cause, told journalists: "Today we again received a shameful decision which proves that a dictatorship is establishing itself in Ukraine."

She said the ruling would be the basis for a fresh appeal to the Strasbourg-based European Court of Human Rights (ECHR).

The authorities have ignored Western criticism and piled up fresh charges against Tymoshenko for alleged past misdeeds.

In a separate trial, which has been adjourned several times because of Tymoshenko's ill health, she is accused of embezzlement and tax evasion going back to alleged offences when she was in business in the 1990s.

Lawyers for Tymoshenko pressed her case at the ECHR on Tuesday, arguing that her pre-trial detention had been unlawful and that she had been subjected to degrading treatment in prison.

The former prime minister was a leader of the 2004 Orange Revolution protests against sleaze and cronyism in Ukraine that derailed Yanukovich's first bid for the presidency.

She served two terms as prime minister under President Viktor Yushchenko, but the two fell out and their partnership dissolved into bickering and infighting.

She narrowly lost to Yanukovich in a run-off for the presidency in February 2010 after a bitter campaign.

US women, Auriemma go for Olympic basketball gold

LONDON (AP) ? Geno Auriemma never thought he'd have a chance to coach the U.S. women's Olympic basketball team.

He had heard the talk: He was too abrasive, too politically incorrect.

None of that mattered to USA Basketball. And when Auriemma was offered the job he 2009, he jumped at it. Now he has the U.S. women's basketball team one victory from a fifth straight gold medal.

The Americans will play France on Saturday night in the Olympic final.

"Being able to coach this team, there are no other opportunities you could possibly hope for," Auriemma said. "For me, winning the gold medal is something that I probably won't be able to talk about or fully express until it actually happens, cause I'm sure you can't prepare for it, how you're going to feel or what it means to you personally."

For all his perceived faults, Auriemma has proved the right choice.

He is used to the pressure of being expected to win and knowing that anything less than a title is considered a failure. He has guided Connecticut to seven national championships, including four perfect seasons and an NCAA-record 90 straight victories.

The U.S. team, which has won an unprecedented four straight gold medals and hasn't lost a game in 16 years, hasn't missed a beat under Auriemma.

It helps that half the players on the Olympic team are UConn alums, used to his system and his personality.

"Coach really hasn't changed much," said Diana Taurasi, who helped Auriemma win three NCAA titles in college. "He's the same guy, just gives us a little more freedom now that we're older and pros. He listens to us more. Everyone knows what coach has done for women's basketball. He brought a different point of view to things.

"It's not all flowery, flowery women's basketball. It's not just skirts and cupcakes. Sometimes there's some steak and cussing. That's life, it's not all that pretty."

Taurasi fully supports Auriemma and said if the Americans win the gold medal the first thing she'll do is "put it around his neck. That's how much he means to me."

Before that can happen, the Americans have to deal with upstart France, which is playing well in only its second Olympic appearance.

"They're a team nobody really talked about heading into the tournament, but personally I knew that was going to be a team we might have to face," said U.S. point guard Sue Bird.

France is undefeated in the tournament like the U.S. although the Americans have beaten teams by 34 points a game, France just eight.

Nonetheless, Bird knows a win won't be automatic.

"I've played with all their girls and know how talented they are," she said.

Both teams are assured of walking away with at least the silver medal, but anything less than gold for the Americans would be considered a monumental failure.

The Americans have cruised through the Olympics during their remarkable run. Only one team has come within single digits of them since the streak started in 1996. They've won by nearly 30 points a game. The Americans have only lost once in major international competitions since 1996 with the lone blemish coming against Russia in the semifinals of the 2006 world championships.

The U.S. faced its first challenge of the London Games when Australia took a four-point halftime lead. It was the first time in 12 years that the Americans had been trailing at the half. There was no panic or worry. They just stepped up their defense and vanquished the Aussies, winning by 13 points.

The players are very aware of the legacy.

"This is USA Basketball's streak," Candace Parker said. "We're just trying not to be the people that end it. I want a second gold medal. There are people that want a third. And some are looking for their first. So all of us are fighting for something in our own way."

First order of business is winning the gold ? which would extend the streak.

"We've been taking it one game at a time all along, so this is just the next one," Bird said. "Obviously there is a lot more at stake, but we really aren't thinking that way."

France already has made great strides ? clinching its first medal in women's basketball.

The victory over Russia in the semifinals set off a wild celebration for the unbeaten French, who have been on the rise in women's basketball over the past few years. They won the European Championship in 2009 and qualified for the Olympics for the first time since the 2000 Sydney Games where they finished fifth. In this tournament France has already defeated Australia in an overtime thriller and now topped Russia twice.

A win over the Americans would be incredible.

"Nobody talks about us. We don't exist in the Olympic Village," said French coach Pierre Vincent. "The only way to exist is to win. I told the girls in the locker room, if we win, we will exist."

The French have been led by flashy point guard Celine Dumerc. She has been the catalyst for this remarkable run. Her 3-pointer with 0.2 seconds remaining in overtime helped beat Britain in the preliminary round. She also hit a big 3-pointer against Australia and two clinching free throws in the team's four-point win over Canada.

"She's having a tournament for the ages," Auriemma said of Dumerc. "She's definitely been the MVP."

Bird wasn't surprised at France's incredible run to the championship game. After all, the French had been her sleeper team all along.

It will be the first time the two teams have played in the Olympics. France isn't scared of the world's top team.

"They are a very good basketball nation. I play against them the whole year round," French forward Sandrine Gruda said. "It's going to be good. We're not going to give up because it USA. We're competitors."

Report: Racial profiling alleged at Boston airport

NEW YORK (AP) ? Transportation Security Administration officers at Boston's Logan International Airport are alleging that a program intended to help flag possible terrorists based on passengers' mannerisms has led to rampant racial profiling, a newspaper reported Saturday.

The New York Times (http://nyti.ms/P2enzf ) reported on its website that in interviews and internal complaints it has obtained, more than 30 officers involved in the "behavior detection" program at Logan contend that the operation targets not only Middle Easterners, but also passengers who fit certain profiles ? such as Hispanics traveling to Miami, or blacks wearing baseball caps backward.

The TSA told the newspaper on Friday that it is investigating the officers' claims. At a meeting last month with the agency, officers provided written complaints, some of them anonymous, from 32 officers.

The officers said their co-workers were increasingly targeting minorities, believing the stops would lead to the discovery of drugs, outstanding arrest warrants and immigration problems, in response to pressure from managers who wanted high numbers of stops, searches and criminal referrals, The Times reported.

"The behavior detection program is no longer a behavior-based program, but it is a racial profiling program," one officer wrote in an anonymous complaint The Times obtained.

The program, which has been billed as a model for other airports across the country, is intended to allow officers to stop, search and question passengers who seem suspicious. Specially trained "assessors" observe security lines for unusual activity and speak individually with each passenger, looking for inconsistencies in the passenger's responses to questions and behavior such as avoiding eye contact, fidgeting or sweating.

Passengers considered suspicious can be taken aside for more intensive questioning.

At least one passenger has filed a formal complaint with the TSA. Kenneth Boatner, a black psychologist and educational consultant who was traveling to Atlanta on business last month, said he was detained for nearly half an hour as agents examined his belongings, including his checkbook and his patients' clinical notes.

In an interview with The Times, Boatner said he felt humiliated, and that the officers never explained why they were singling him out, but he suspected it was because of his race and attire. He was wearing sweat pants, a white T-shirt and high-top sneakers.

"I had never been subjected to anything like that," Boatner said.

The TSA said the program at Logan "in no way encourages or tolerates profiling," and that passengers cannot be subjected to behavior assessments based on their nationality, race, ethnicity or religion.

"If any of these claims prove accurate, we will take immediate and decisive action to ensure there are consequences to such activity," the agency said in a statement.

The TSA said it did not compile information on passengers' race or ethnicity and could not provide a breakdown of passengers who may have been stopped on either basis through the program.

UN chief: 'There will be no winner in Syria'

After months of protests and violent crackdowns, a look back at the violence that has overtaken the country.

U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon warned Friday "there will be no winner in Syria," as the world body said nearly 150,000 refugees fleeing the 17-month-old conflict had registered in neighboring countries.

In Aleppo, rebels fighting in the Salaheddine district, a southern gateway to the commercial hub, said they had been forced to fall back from frontline positions on Thursday by a fierce bombardment which had reduced buildings to rubble.

"There have been some withdrawals of Free Syrian Army fighters from Salaheddine," rebel commander Abu Ali told Reuters. Others said the main frontlines in the area, which had been held by rebels for more than a week, were now deserted.

The center of the district, near Salaheddine mosque, was abandoned when Reuters journalists visited on Thursday. The only sound was the constant echo of artillery shelling. There were no rebels, no security forces, and only a few residents darting in and out to pick up belongings -- while evading army snipers.

All-consumed fighting
President Bashar Assad, engaged in an all-consuming fight with his mostly Sunni opponents, appointed a Sunni as his new prime minister on Thursday after his predecessor fled Monday in the highest-level defection so far in an uprising that has killed around 20,000 people.

Wael Nader al-Halqi, from the southern province of Daraa where the revolt began, replaces Riyad Hijab, who had spent only two months in the job before making a dramatic escape across the border to Jordan.

Assad's authority was shaken by the assassination last month of four of his top security officials and by rebel gains in Damascus, Aleppo and swathes of rural Syria.

But he has persevered with a crackdown on opponents seeking to end half a century of Baathist rule and topple a system dominated by members of the president's minority Alawite sect.

Rebels say minority Shiite and Alawite Muslims, the groups that have ruled Syria for decades, are being left alone in the carnage inflicted by Syrian troops. NBC's Richard Engel reports.

As the battle for Aleppo raged, Iran, Assad's closest foreign backer, called for "serious and inclusive" negotiations between the Syrian government and opposition.

Assad has repeatedly said he is ready for dialogue, but he has vowed to crush the armed rebels he says are terrorists. His opponents say he must step aside before any talks, arguing negotiations would be meaningless while the bloodshed persists.

"There will be no winner in Syria," Ban said in a statement read by a U.N. representative to the conference in Tehran.

Refugees pour across borders
In Geneva, Adrian Edwards, spokesman of the U.N. High Commissioner for Refugees, told a news briefing that the number of registered Syrian refugees in four neighboring countries continued to grow.

'Situation is desperate' at makeshift hospitals on Syrian-Turkish border

The total includes 50,227 recorded in Turkey, where more than 6,000 Syrians arrived this week alone, the United Nations said.

"There certainly in the past week has been a sharp increase in the numbers arriving in Turkey, and there many of the people are coming from Aleppo and surrounding villages," Edwards said.

People resisting the army of President Bashar al-Assad in northern Syria cope with loss and prepare for fighting.

"Now if you look at other areas, I think that the situation is more of a steady and continued increase, but where fighting happens we tend to see the consequences," he said.

As of Thursday night, there were 45,869 Syrian refugees registered in Jordan, 36,841 in Lebanon and 13,587 in Iraq -- which has also seen the return of 23,228 Iraqis from Syria since July 18, according to the agency.

"In several countries we know there to be substantial refugee numbers who have not yet registered," Edwards said.

Some Syrian refugees have also turned up in other countries including Algeria, Egypt and Morocco, and Evros, the Greek region that borders Turkey, he said, adding that the numbers were "really tiny" compared to the flows to Syria's neighbors.

US confirms StanChart probe, defends Iran sanctions

The US Treasury on Wednesday confirmed a probe into Standard Chartered and defended its Iran sanctions regime following the New York regulator's damaging accusations against the British bank.

Adam Szubin, director of the US Treasury's Office of Foreign Assets Control, told a British counterpart in a letter that his office "is investigating the bank for potential Iran-related violations as well as a broader set of potential sanctions violations."

The letter, obtained by AFP, gave no further information on the investigation, but defended Washington's policy of punishing banks operating in the United States that do business with Iranian banks.

"These cases serve as a powerful deterrent, and we continue to investigate past conduct by offenders. We take sanctions violations by financial institutions extremely seriously," Szubin said.

Media reports earlier said the Treasury, the Justice Department and the Federal Reserve had actually been caught unaware when the New York Department of Financial Services (DFS) accused Standard Chartered of laundering some $250 billion for Iranian banks in violation of US sanctions on Tehran.

And in London, Standard Chartered's chief executive Peter Sands lashed out against the charges while British officials raised questions about the US action.

"There are a lot of matters that we don't recognize, we don't understand and are factually inaccurate," Sands told a conference call.

He said the bank's profits from the transactions amounted to "tens of millions" of dollars, not hundreds of millions as DFS had suggested.

He added that the episode was "clearly very damaging. It would be unrealistic to pretend otherwise."

The bank's shares plunged 16.8 percent Tuesday, a day after the DFS charges, but recovered 7.1 percent Wednesday in London trade.

British newspapers cited unnamed officials as accusing the United States of trying to undermine the rival British banking industry, after it leveled Iran sanctions charges at other British and European banks this year.

Bank of England governor Mervyn King on Wednesday downplayed that view, while criticizing the DFS's decision to act while other US regulators were still investigating the bank.

"Overall, I don't judge my colleagues or others in the United States as having any such intention" to undermine British banks, he said.

"All the UK authorities would ask is that the various regulatory bodies that are investigating a particular case try to work together and refrain from making too many public statements until the investigation is completed.

"That seems to me the appropriate time to make clear what the judgment is and what the punishment is."

The New York Times said that federal agencies had been blindsided by the move Monday by DFS head Benjamin Lawsky.

In an order to Standard Chartered to explain its actions, the DFS called it a "rogue bank" which had systematically sought to hide its lucrative business of transferring US dollars for Iranian banks between 2001 and 2010.

The DFS threatened to remove Standard Chartered's New York banking license, which would lock it out of one of the world foremost financial hubs.

The Times said federal regulators were upset that Lawsky went ahead without them and that Treasury Department officials believe that many of the Iran-linked transactions, while questionable, "were not necessarily illegal."

The newspaper said that both the Justice Department and the Fed were still reviewing the evidence and had not decided on whether to bring charges.

Standard Chartered said it has been cooperating with all of the regulators for years on the issue, voluntarily approaching them over the matter and providing extensive documentation of its activities.

It said in a statement Monday that only $14 million worth of transactions -- so-called U-turn deals which moved US dollars between clients through its New York dollar clearing unit -- did not follow US rules.
