Judd's rep confirmed to E! News that Moser popped the question to his longtime girlfriend on Christmas Eve. Merry holiday, indeed!

But in an effort to keep some things private, specific details about the proposal and engagement ring are, for now, being kept under wraps.

No wedding date has been set (or at least announced) for the personal and professional couple (they're currently touring together as Wynonna and the Big Noise), though it will be the third trip down the aisle for the 47-year-old singer.

She divorced hubby No. 2, J.D. Roach, in 2007, after four years of marriage and amid some damning accusations. Her first marriage, to Nashville businessman Arch Kelly III, ended in 1998. She has two children from that marriage, 17-year-old Elijah and 15-year-old Grace.

Congrats, you two!

Military Hazing and Race and Religion

?

Check out Jeff Yang?s excellent Wall Street Journal piece on military hazing, especially in light of the recent incidents with Pvt. Danny Chen and Lance Corporal Henry Lew: Afghanistan Hazing Echoes ?A Few Good Men.?

Jeff interviews Lieutenant Dan Choi, who says:

?You now have a much less diverse army, one whose culture is very southern, very Christian and very white,? says military activist and former Army Lieutenant Dan Choi. ?And anyone who?s a minority in that culture has to accept that they?re an outsider if they want to survive, and try their best to fit in. If you?re different in any regard, you stick out. And the Asian saying applies: The nail that sticks out gets hammered down.?

I can definitely see this. The military requires conformity, and if you don?t conform because of race or religion, I can see how some soldiers may want to beat it out of you. It?s hard because military culture prioritizes conformity, while the population of the U.S. is diverse. I like the way Jeff also ends with the story about Civil War Lieutenant General John Schofield, who wrote Schofield?s Definition of Discipline, which all cadets who graduate from West Point and the Air Force Academy must memorize and recite by heart. Here it is in its entirety:

The discipline which makes the soldiers of a free country reliable in battle is not to be gained by harsh or tyrannical treatment. On the contrary, such treatment is far more likely to destroy than to make an army. It is possible to impart instruction and give commands in such a manner and such a tone of voice as to inspire in the soldier no feeling, but an intense desire to obey, while the opposite manner and tone of voice cannot fail to excite strong resentment and a desire to disobey. The one mode or other of dealing with subordinates springs from a corresponding spirit in the breast of the commander. He who feels the respect which is due to others cannot fail to inspire in them respect for himself. While he who feels, and hence manifests, disrespect towards others, especially his subordinates, cannot fail to inspire hatred against himself.

CNN edges up in its battle with MSNBC (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) ? Next year could be a critical one for CNN in the battle for second place, if the final 2011 cable news ratings are any indication.

Now fully in for 2010, the Nielsen numbers show Fox News safely ensconced in the top spot -- a place it has now occupied for nearly 10 years -- but the gap between its two counterparts narrowing.

MSNBC maintained its dominance in primetime, besting CNN during the three-hour block in the adults 25-54 demo for the third straight year (242,000 to 222,000) and in total viewers for the second straight year (775,000 to 689,000).

But CNN, coming off its worst year in more than a decade, rebounded slightly, maintaining its lead in total day viewers (479,000 to 435,000) and reclaiming the total day demo (160,000 to 148,000).

2011 was still the network's second-worst year this millennium, but an improvement over a far more troublesome 2010.

The jostling between the two rivals escalated in the second half of the year as CNN seemed to finally surge in September and October, notching a rare win in the demo during primetime -- much of that because the network hosted more of the often-incendiary GOP debates.

But by November, after flipping Lawrence O'Donnell and Ed Schultz in its primetime lineup, MSNBC was back on top, even passing CNN in total day viewers.

MSNBC President Phil Griffin has spent the past year championing his network's triumphs over CNN and trying to refocus the narrative on chasing Fox.

His network has ascended over the past few years, propelled by a shift in identity -- it is now a home for "progressives" -- and by the 2008 election. Its goal for next year: to chip away at Fox's heavy suit of armor.

It won't be easy. Though Fox's viewership declined by 8 percent this year, its top 11 shows still drew more than a million viewers -- a threshold nothing on MSNBC or CNN crossed.

That MSNBC still trumpets its victories over CNN more than it compares numbers with Fox signals that its older rival remains a concern, particularly in an election year.

CNN, meanwhile, has had its own inner struggles. In the past year, it has changed presidents -- from John Klein to Ken Jautz -- and remade its nightly lineup -- hiring Piers Morgan and Erin Burnett while waving goodbye to Larry King and Eliot Spitzer.

Yet 2011, replete with international news, lifted the network just in time for an election year.

Last time there was a presidential election, CNN posted its best ratings ever. This time around, it will find out whether it has found a winning formula.

One would have to imagine that CNN has a new show in mind for primetime. Anderson Cooper still airs at both 8 p.m., where he finished in fourth place, and 10 p.m., where the show excels.

However it shakes out, this year's ratings are a prequel. Though popular enthusiasm for the 2012 election may fail to match the heights of 2008, there will be no greater test of the balance of power.

Top 10 pundit do-overs of 2011 (Politico)

The wildly volatile early stages of the Republican presidential race made it especially hard for pundits to see around corners this year ? particularly when the line between prognosticating and wishing seemed occasionally to disappear. Trying to gauge the impact of scandals also proved difficult. And a tragic crime caused some classic overreaction.

Here are the year?s biggest screw-ups from the commentariat.

Violent right-wing rhetoric caused the Tucson shootings.

Jared Loughner is crazy. That?s the opinion of the experts who diagnosed him with schizophrenia, the judge who ruled in May that he was not mentally competent to stand trial, and many of the friends and family members who watched him stop making sense, stop being able to hold down a job and stop being able to relate to people in recent years.

These facts were not yet widely known on Jan. 8, the day that Loughner shot Rep. Gabrielle Giffords (D-Ariz.) in the head and killed six others in Tucson, but that didn?t stop the country?s most prominent liberal commentators from drawing political meaning out of the act that very day.

Within hours of the shooting, Paul Krugman posted to his blog and Keith Olbermann demanded on the air that conservative figures like Glenn Beck and Sarah Palin disavow their violent rhetoric.

Subsequent reporting suggested that Loughner was not engaged in partisan politics, and as Time magazine later put it in its look into Loughner?s mental state, ?In short, saying Sarah Palin or Glenn Beck caused Loughner?s actions is, to put it charitably, completely idiotic.?

Michele Bachmann will win the Republican nomination.

Bachmann?s moment at the top of the polls in Iowa may have been fleeting, but in midsummer it was convincing enough to inspire MSNBC?s Chris Matthews to make a bold prediction: She would beat Mitt Romney and win the Republican nomination for president.

Matthews told the live audience on ?Real Time With Bill Maher? in July, ?She?s my hero. She?s going all the way. She?s going to win this thing. I tell you right now, I predict she beats Romney. She?s going to beat him in New Hampshire.?

He pointed to Pat Buchanan?s performance in the state against George H.W. Bush and McCain?s victory over Romney last time around. ?I think you?re going to see a huge upset,? he predicted, because Bachmann has ?passion? and is ?not a fake.?

Current polling puts her in a single-digit fifth place in both Iowa and the nation ? and a 3.8 percent in New Hampshire, according to the Real Clear Politics average.

Anonymous Hackers Still Active, Closing 2011 with a Bang (NewsFactor)

Anonymous struck again on Monday morning -- and the backlash by the infamous hacking group may not be over yet. Anonymous, which took down Strategic Forecasting's Web site over the weekend, has vowed to strike again. This time, the targets are Stratfor members who are speaking out to support the firm.

As a result of the hack, Stratfor said it has reason to believe the names of its private corporate subscribers have been posted on other Web sites. Its Web site remained down Tuesday afternoon. The last update from Stratfor was Sunday night.

Stratfor sees the hack as retaliation for the treatment of Pfc. Bradley Manning, an Army intelligence analyst charged with leaking more than 250,000 U.S. diplomatic cables to the WikiLeaks Web site. WikiLeaks posted many of the cables.

Global Clients Compromised

"It's come to our attention that our members who are speaking out in support of us on Facebook may be being targeted for doing so and are at risk of having sensitive information repeatedly published on other Web sites," the company wrote on its Facebook page. "So, in order to protect yourselves, we recommend taking security precautions when speaking out on Facebook or abstaining from it altogether."

The firm said it was diligently investigating the issue. The data is of an especially sensitive nature, considering Stratfor is a global intelligence firm that deals in business, economic, security and geopolitical affairs. Clients include the U.S. Department of Defense, Lockheed Martin, Los Alamos National Laboratory, Doctors Without Borders and Bank of America.

"Anonymous keeps doing this because it works, and that's part of the problem," said Zeus Kerravala, principal analyst at ZK Research. "PayPal has been the No. 1 target." Anonymous gained fame last year when it issued a hit list of Web sites hostile to WikiLeaks, including PayPal, Visa and MasterCard.

Anonymous Backlash

Kerravala is correct. Anonymous attacks work in that they disrupt the business world, but authorities are beginning to find success cracking down on Anonymous members. The first major arrest was made by Dutch police in Dec. 2010 in conjunction with the cyberattacks to protest shutdown of financial contributions to WikiLeaks.

In June, Spanish police celebrated the arrest of three men who allegedly were part of the computer hacking group that launched cyberattacks against Sony's PlayStation Network, among others. Authorities in Turkey, Australia and Great Britain have also made arrests of alleged Anonymous members. But the Anonymous arrests haven't stopped the attacks. Indeed, 2011 saw the rise of hacktivism on many fronts.

Paul Henry, a security analyst at Lumension, told NewsFactor one year ago today that the world hadn't heard the last of WikiLeaks. On Dec. 27, 2011 he said he expected the impact of WikiLeaks to expand well beyond simply embarrassing governments, to releasing data that would cause harm to big-business reputations.

He was right. Despite the fact that its funding has been largely strangled, WikiLeaks continues to be a force to be reckoned with, even if it's only through the attacks of groups like Anonymous.

Consumer confidence hits 8-month high

A monthly survey shows consumers' confidence in the economy in December surged to the highest level since April and is near a post-recession peak.

The New York-based Conference Board says Tuesday that its Consumer Confidence Index rose almost 10 points to 64.5, up from a revised 55.2 in November. Analysts had expected 59.

The surge builds on another big increase in November, when the index rose almost 15 points from the month before.

Improving confidence is in line with retail reports of a decent holiday shopping season. Still, the December confidence reading is below the 90 level that indicates an economy on solid footing.

Economists watch the confidence numbers closely because consumer spending ? including items like health care ? accounts for about 70 percent of U.S. economic activity.

Story: Economists see growth picking up in new year

Labor market conditions have improved in recent months, with the unemployment rate falling to a 2-1/2 year low in November and applications for first time jobless benefits at the lowest since April 2008.

The survey's present situation index rose to 46.7 this month --- the highest since September 2008 -- from 38.3 in November. The expectations index surged to 76.4 from 66.4 in November.

"Consumers are more optimistic that business conditions, employment prospects and their financial situations will get better," the Conference Board said in a statement.

"While consumers are ending the year in a somewhat more upbeat mood, it is too soon to tell if this is a rebound from earlier declines or a sustainable shift in attitudes."

The Associated Press and Reuters contributed to this report.

Wim Wenders Plans 3D Film About Architecture

While James Cameron can be credited with bringing 3D back to the multiplex in a big way, leave it to guys like Martin Scorsese and Wim Wenders to truly push the boundaries of the format in 2011, proving that it can do more than just make expensive, special effects blockbusters look good. For Scorsese, "Hugo" was arguably far more immersive than anything in "Avatar," with every inch of each frame a wonder to look at. Meanwhile, Wenders used 3D as a dimension to capture the energy and power of dance in a way that has never been done before, and the director is heading back to the format for a brand new project that also promises to offer more than meets than eye.

With "Pina" hitting theaters this weekend, Wenders recently talked to the Documentary Channel?and revealed he's already at work on a new non-fiction film. "I have actually already started a long-term project, another documentary in 3D. It will take several years, but it?s going to be about architecture," Wenders said. "I have always wanted to do a film about architecture, and I have a lot of architect friends. But that is another subject I never really knew how to approach with film. I realized through 'Pina' that architecture is something that could have a real affinity to this medium. We started shooting already, but it?s at the very, very beginning. That?s going to be my next documentary project in 3D, but I would definitely also do a narrative film in the future in 3D as well."

If this sounds vaguely familiar, you might remember that back in 2010?Wenders hit the Venice Architecture Biennale with the short 3D video installed "If These Walls Could Talk..." an exploration of the Rolex Learning Center in Switzerland pictured above (you can watch a shitty bootleg of that video below). But it's probably a safe guess that the short is a leaping-off point for this project in which Wenders hopes to further investigate modern architecture and how we interact with it.

"Most architects build this stuff and they already have 3D representation. They can enter a building before they even build it. But I think especially with modern architecture, to make a film that really deals with the sense of place and how it changes the way people use buildings and are shaped by cities and buildings, that could not really have been done before," Wenders explains. "To feel what the room does to you, that is something that you could describe almost better in words than in a two-dimensional film. It is really about a sense of place. That?s a feeling that many architects share with filmmakers and that?s a common thing the two professions have. I?m really excited to have this tool now that gives this sense of place, and so I am quite excited about my architecture project."

However, if Wenders will direct any other movie in the interim as he works on his architecture doc remains to be seen. His film project "Everything Will Be Fine" is still in development?and has been for a while. It's a drama penned by?Bj?rn Olaf Johannessen about a man who hits a child while driving around after having an argument at home, and repercussions of that event on his life over the next twelve years. Wenders had also been attached to direct an adapation of?Ryu Murakami's novel "In The?Miso Soup" -- about Japanese man giving an American a tour of the strip bars and sex clubs of Tokyo only to realize the man might be a murderer -- but that seems to have fallen off the radar. It was originally planned to shoot in the spring of this year, but obviously, that didn't happen.

Still, we're fascinated to see where Wenders will take his camera for this untitled doc and architecture really is a great subject for 3D, so we're eager to see what he does with it now that he's already got one movie in the format under his belt (though we're not quite sure whatever happened to his 3D short film "Flight" starring Ben Gazzara).

In first half of this year, the domestic group buying market was cultivating in a vibrant scene and the landscape of group buying websites has been intermittently under convulsion.

The grim reality is such a crowded market, fueled by venture capitals and vicious competition, filled with counterfeit products and not guaranteed offline service, is shrinking and becoming a grotesque gallery of layoffs, closings, late payments, dissatisfied clients, and shattered dreams.

After all, consumers still have the local business demands. The market is there and won?t be gone with wind.

?Payroll Tax, The Sequel?: Did either side learn any lessons from Part 1?

The impasse over the payroll tax cut sent the public approval rating for Congress to new depths even as it gave Obama a corresponding boost. But as negotiators reopen discussions for a longer deal, all bets are off.

Congress took its impasse over payroll tax cuts and other expiring provisions to the brink of raising taxes for some 160 million Americans, before House Speaker John Boehner gave in.

Now, with barely a pause, it all begins again.

Both Republicans and Democrats are assessing the fallout from a standoff that drove Congress?s approval to record low levels ? and bumped President Obama to his highest approval ratings in 12 months.

Some 47 percent of Americans approve of the way the president is handling his job, according to a Gallup poll released on Tuesday. That?s up five points since the standoff with House Republicans over the payroll tax cut began.

By contrast, Congress wound up the year at an 11 percent approval rating ? its lowest level since the Gallup organization began asking the question in 1974. Polls signal that the public blames Republicans more than Democrats for the dysfunction on Capitol Hill.

The deal that broke the impasse, first proposed by Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell, extends expiring provisions for two months. It also commits House and Senate negotiators to work out a full-year extension of the payroll tax ?holiday,? as well as expiring federal jobless benefits and a ?fix? to block a 27.4 percent cut in payments to doctors serving Medicare patients.

But congressional leaders are signaling that key issues once viewed as resolved are back on the table for a new round of negotiations, casting doubt on whether a deeply divided Congress can ? or even wants to ? agree on the expiring provisions before the 2012 elections.

A key sticking point is how to pay for the $100 billion needed to extend these provisions for the balance of 2012. In the run-up to the two-month deal, Democrats publicly set aside demands to pay for extending the payroll tax cuts with a surtax on incomes over $1 million ? a nonstarter for House Republicans.

On Friday, Senate majority leader Harry Reid (D) of Nevada told reporters that he had instructed his four Democratic conferees to allow ?nothing off the table,? including higher taxes on the rich. ?I?ve talked to Senate Republicans, plural, who think that that there should be a fair tax on rich people,? he said in a briefing on Dec. 23. ?I am going to make sure that my conferees understand that that could be part of what we try to do, and we?ll see what happens.?

At the same time, Senator Reid said that Democratic negotiators would be revisiting a provision in the two-month agreement that calls for reducing federal jobless benefits from 99 to 79 weeks.??We couldn?t get it done otherwise,? he said. ?And so we?ll come back and revisit that.?

Gingrich fails to qualify for Va. primary ballot (AP)

WASHINGTON ? Republican presidential hopeful Newt Gingrich failed to qualify for Virginia's Super Tuesday primary ballot, the latest setback for a candidate whose standing in polls has been slipping. Gingrich's campaign said he would pursue an aggressive write-in campaign, though state law prohibits write-ins on primary ballots.

The state party said early Saturday that Gingrich and Texas Gov. Rick Perry had failed to submit the required 10,000 signatures to appear on the March 6 ballot.

Failing to get on the ballot in Virginia, where Gingrich lives, underscores the difficulty first-time national candidates have in preparing for the long haul of a presidential campaign.

And it illustrates the advantage held by Mitt Romney, the former Massachusetts governor, who has essentially been running for president for five years. Romney's team, larger than those of most of his opponents, has paid close attention to filing requirements in each state. He will appear on the Virginia ballot along with Texas Rep. Ron Paul, who also has run a national campaign before.

Ironically, Gingrich had a slight lead over Romney in a Quinnipiac poll of Virginia Republicans released earlier in the week.

The former House speaker surged in popularity in early December and tried to use that momentum to make up for a stalled campaign organization. But his standing in polls has slipped in recent days amid a barrage of negative ads in Iowa, where the Jan. 3 caucuses begin the contest for the Republican presidential nomination.

Three other candidates ? Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann, former Pennsylvania Sen. Rick Santorum and former Utah Gov. Jon Huntsman ? did not submit signatures before Virginia's deadline of 5 p.m. Thursday.

Gingrich's campaign attacked Virginia's primary system on Saturday, saying that "only a failed system" would disqualify Gingrich and other candidates and vowing to run a write-in campaign.

"Voters deserve the right to vote for any top contender, especially leading candidates," Gingrich campaign director Michael Krull said in a statement. "We will work with the Republican Party of Virginia to pursue an aggressive write-in campaign to make sure that all the voters of Virginia are able to vote for the candidate of their choice."

However, according to state law, "No write-in shall be permitted on ballots in primary elections."

"Virginia code prohibits write-ins in primaries. He can't do it," said Carl Tobias, a law professor at University of Richmond.

Tobias said Gingrich may have had trouble meeting a requirement that he must submit 400 signatures from each of Virginia's 11 congressional districts.

Gingrich's campaign did not immediately respond to a request for comment. Gingrich had been concerned enough to deliver his signatures personally. Rushing Wednesday from New Hampshire, which holds its primary on Jan. 10, he had supporters sign petitions before entering a rally in Arlington, Va.

Virginia GOP spokesman Garren Shipley said in a statement that volunteers spent Friday validating signatures on petitions that Romney, Paul, Perry and Gingrich had submitted. "After verification, RPV has determined that Newt Gingrich did not submit required 10k signatures and has not qualified for the VA primary," the party announced early Saturday on its Twitter feed. Shipley did not respond to telephone calls Saturday seeking comment.

Forty-six delegates will be at stake in Virginia's Super Tuesday primary. That's a small fraction of the 1,144 delegates needed to win the nomination. But they could prove pivotal in a close race, especially for a candidate like Gingrich, who expects to do well in Southern contests.

Gingrich already missed the deadline to appear on the ballot in Missouri's Feb. 7 primary, though he insists it doesn't matter because the state awards delegates based not on the primary but on a Republican caucus held in March.

Meanwhile, Virginia's Democrats said President Barack Obama's re-election campaign gathered enough signatures to get him on the state's primary ballot though he was the only candidate who qualified.

Netflix CEO Reed Hastings takes $1.5 million pay cut (Reuters)

NEW YORK (TheWrap.com) ? Netflix CEO Reed Hastings is getting the corporate equivalent of coal in his Christmas stocking -- a pay cut.

According to the company's filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission on Thursday, Hastings' salary is taking a $1.5 million hit in 2012.

While his base annual salary of $500,000 remains the same, his stock option compensation drops from $3 million this year to $1.5 million next year.

Based on those two figures, Hastings will make less in 2012 than Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos and Chief Product Officer Neil Hunt. In 2011, Hastings led the executive pack.

Why the pay cut? One has to assume it is related to the company's turbulent year.

Netflix announced a controversial new pricing plan in July that enraged customers.

Hastings then admitted the company erred in a blog post while announcing a new DVD-by-mail service, Qwikster. How was it different from the original Netflix service? It wasn't really, just a new name.

Netflix then canceled Qwikster and brought all its services back under one roof.

Throw in a few lost deals with the likes of Starz, and it's been a rough few months for the company.

Still, aside from the contracts all of these mishaps came down to one issue. Netflix wanted to shift as many customers to streaming, which costs the company less than shipping physical DVDs. Those that still want the DVDs would have to pay more so Netflix doesn't lose money on the service.

Most analysts seemed to understand the basic need, but it was the company's way of going about the change that was calamitous, as were its attempts at damage control.

But Sarandos told TheWrap earlier this month that the company will bounce back in 2012, and who is to say it won't?

For now, Hastings will have to settle for a couple million in change. Happy holidays indeed.

Space-Flying Dutchman's Must-Haves: Time, Space Stamps & Cheese (SPACE.com)

The first Dutch astronaut to return to space, Andr? Kuipers is about to begin five and a half months on board the International Space Station (ISS), a mission the European Space Agency named "PromISSe."

To that end, organizations in the Netherlands have offered up products?aimed at keeping Kuipers' PromISSe ? from keeping time to keeping in touch to keeping well fed.

Kuipers launched to space?on Wednesday (Dec. 21) with Russian cosmonaut Oleg Kononenko and NASA astronaut Don Pettit. The three are scheduled to arrive at the station on Friday (Dec. 23), when they will join the outpost's 30th expedition crew.

All three are spaceflight veterans. This is Kuipers' second time aboard the station. His first mission, "Delta," in 2004 lasted just 11 days on the orbiting laboratory.

With much more time to consider this time around, Dutch companies have contributed to making Kuipers' stay more comfortable, while also giving his fellow countrymen ways to commemorate their astronaut's journey. [Astronaut Holiday Photo Album]

Keeping time

Despite the brevity of his 2004 mission, Kuipers said that he lost track of time while in space. To help address this, Dutch watchmaker Roland Oostwegel created the "R.O.1 SPACE Special Edition," a timepiece that features a dial that displays mission elapsed time in days and weeks.

Kuipers launched with the special watch, which like all his and his crewmates' other equipment had to be certified for use on the station. Fabricated out of carbon-fiber so it is lightweight, the watch also features a sub-dial display for the time it takes for the space station to circle the Earth, 91 minutes and 59 seconds.

Other watches, like Omega's Speedmaster X-33 which is issued to all station crew members, also display mission elapsed time, though as one of its several different digital displays.

To celebrate Kuipers' mission and the first Dutch watch in space, Roland Oostwegel also created a limited edition series of similar watches for those on the ground. Unlike Kuipers' "special edition" timepiece though, the stainless steel, titanium, gold, and ceramic Earth-based versions swap out the mission elapsed time feature for a day and date calendar display.

The limited edition R.O.1 SPACE watches start at ?4900 (about $6,400).

Keeping in touch

Dutch space fans seeking a less expensive memento of Kuipers' mission?can turn to a local postal company.

PostNL, in cooperation with the European Space Agency, began this week offering a collection of space postcards and stamps honoring and showing Kuipers in space.

The 34 different postcards feature photos from Earth orbit of cities, the wonders of the world and space. The limited edition stamps, which are offered in a "sheetlet" of three, show Kuipers during his 2004 mission and the Earth as viewed from the International Space Station.

Both the postcards and the stamps can be ordered online through PostNL and its online service, KaartWereld. The stamp sheetlet, which comes with three of the postcards, cost ?4,95 (about $6.50).

Keeping well fed

Not all companies contributing to Kuipers' mission needed to develop new products ? some were off the (food store) shelf.

Station crew members are allowed to have a small supply of "bonus" foods to amend their regular menus. In Kuipers' case, he chose a taste of home.

Each of his nine bonus food containers include two blocks of New Amsterdam, Dutch cheese produced by Westland Kaasspecialiteiten. Sealed to stay fresh for up to a year, the 18 cheese squares were launched to the space station on a Russian resupply craft.

A gourmet cheese, New Amsterdam is described to have a "buttery" aged Gouda flavor.

"It is our great honor to supply Andr? Kuipers and his colleagues with a stock of Old Amsterdam in space," said Henri?tte Westland, a spokeswoman for the Dutch cheese company. "We are always in search of new fans abroad, but making it as far as outer space we obviously never expected."

St. Paul firefighter Rodney Edwards, 'Mayor of Frogtown,' retires after 31 years

After 31 years of protecting the city where he grew up, the "Mayor of Frogtown" has retired from the St. Paul Fire Department.

Rodney Edwards was raised in the neighborhood he spent the past two decades protecting. When his father died, he said he learned about it when a call came into Fire Station No. 18. He sometimes knew the parents of young victims when his crew was called to a shooting involving them.

"That's the nature of this job," Edwards, 58, said. "You never know who you're going to run into, who you're going to help. I was glad to be there for them."

Edwards spent about 20 years at Fire Station No. 18, 681 W. University Ave. There, he and his colleagues prided themselves on being the first to arrive on a call, he said. There's a saying on the back of Ladder 18 that if you can read the sign, you're "second in," Edwards said.

Every spring through fall, when Edwards sat with his crew outside after dinner at the station, people walking or driving by would yell out his name, said fellow firefighter Tom Henry, who spent 11 years on the same crew as Edwards.

"It was fun to drive down the street, and you could not get from Dale Street to Lexington (Avenue) without getting three people to yell out at him and wave at him," Henry said.

Prior to becoming a firefighter, Edwards worked maintenance at nursing homes, he said. The father of three, who also helped raise a nephew, wanted a career change and had contemplated becoming a nurse until he learned

about training for upcoming firefighter tests. In 1978, he took and passed the physical and written tests, he said. In 1980, he joined the ranks.

"I'm a caregiver," he said. "I've always liked helping people"

He was a firefighter until 1992, when he was promoted to fire equipment operator.

Edwards earned four lifesaving awards during his time with the department, said St. Paul Fire Chief Tim Butler. He "epitomized what we do, who we are, what we stand for," he said.

In 1992, Edwards was among a group of black St. Paul firefighters who sued the city and its then chief over alleged racial harassment and discrimination in the department.

"The lawsuit...it brought about change," Edwards said.

Of the department's 433 fire suppression staff members, 33 are African-American, said St. Paul Fire Marshal Steve Zaccard.

Edwards said he would like to see more African-American firefighters in St. Paul.

Edwards first thought about retiring two years ago, after he fell from a ladder that had given way, noting it wasn't the determining factor in his decision. He bounced back like a "Slinky."

"Firefighting is dangerous, no matter what your job is," Edwards said. "I wanted to go out with good health."

His colleagues called him Humpty Dumpty after the incident, Henry said.

Because Edwards was always concerned for the safety of his crew, he went above and beyond, he said. It's not typical of fire equipment operators to climb up and down ladders, tools in hand, as Edwards did that day, he said.

"Other drivers don't do that," he said.

Dozens die as 14 bombs explode across Baghdad

A wave of bombings ripped across Baghdad on Thursday morning, killing at least 60 people and injuring more than 150 in the worst violence Iraq has seen for months. The bloodbath comes just days after American forces left the country.

The blasts also came on the heels of a political crisis between Iraq's Sunni and Shiite factions that erupted this weekend.

The political spat has raised fears that Iraq's sectarian wounds will be reopened during a fragile time when Iraq is finally navigating its own political future without U.S. military support.

Most of the attacks appeared to hit Shiite neighborhoods although some Sunni areas were also targeted.

Ex-Iraq leader says US left job undone

While the string of explosions was likely not a direct response to the political Sunni-Shiite confrontation, it will ratchet up tensions at a time when many Iraqis are already worried about security. If continued, it could lead to the same type of tit-for-tat attacks that characterized the insurgency years ago.

Iraqi officials said at least 14 blasts went off early Thursday morning in 11 neighborhoods around the city.

Figures gathered from Iraqi health and police officials across the city put the death toll at 60, with 160 injured. The spokesman for the Iraqi health ministry put the death toll at 57 and said at least 176 people were injured. Conflicting casualty figures are common in the aftermath of such attacks.

The explosions ranged from blasts from sticky bombs attached to cars to roadside bombs and vehicles packed with explosives. There was at least one suicide bombing among the attacks.

'A huge explosion'
At least 18 people were killed when a suicide bomber driving an ambulance detonated the vehicle near a government office in the Karrada district, sending up a dust cloud and scattering car parts into a kindergarten, police and health officials said.

"We heard the sound of a car driving, then car brakes, then a huge explosion, all our windows and doors are blown out, black smoke filled our apartment," said Maysoun Kamal, who lives in a Karrada compound.

Raghad Khalid, a teacher at a kindergarten near the Karrada blast, said "some parts of the car bomb are inside our building."

"I saw all the windows were blown out and glass scattered everywhere. The children were scared and crying," Khalid added.

Two roadside bombs struck the southwestern Amil district, killing at least seven people and wounding 21 others, while a car bomb blew up in a Shiite neighborhood in Doura in the south, killing three people and wounding six, police said.

"My baby was sleeping in her bed. Shards of glass have fallen on our heads. Her father hugged her and carried her. She is now scared in the next room," said one woman in western Baghdad who identified herself as Um Hanin. "All countries are stable. Why don't we have security and stability?"

More bombs ripped into the central Alawi area, Shaab and Shula in the north, all mainly Shiite areas, and a roadside bomb killed one and wounded five near the Sunni neighborhood of Adhamiya, police said.

Violence in Iraq has ebbed since the height of sectarian violence in 2006-2007, when suicide bombers and hit squads targeted Sunni and Shiite communities in attacks that killed thousands of people.

Stubborn insurgency
Iraq is still fighting a stubborn, lower-grade insurgency with Sunni Islamists tied to al-Qaida and Shiite militias, who U.S. officials say are backed by Iran, still staging daily attacks.

The last few thousand American troops pulled out of Iraq over the weekend, nearly nine years after the invasion that toppled Sunni dictator Saddam Hussein. Many Iraqis had said they feared a return to sectarian violence without a U.S. military buffer.

Just days after the withdrawal, Iraq's fragile power-sharing government is grappling with its worst turmoil since its formation a year ago. Shiite, Sunni and Kurdish blocs share out government posts in a unwieldy system that has been impaired by political infighting since it began.

Story: Iraq PM warns Sunnis could be shut from power

The government of Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki, who is a Shiite, has accused the Sunni Vice President Tariq al-Hashemi of running a hit squad that targeted government officials.

Al-Maliki is also pushing for a vote of no-confidence against another Sunni politician, the deputy prime minister Saleh al-Mutlaq. Al-Maliki was likened to Saddam by al-Mutlaq.

Many Sunnis fear that this is part of a wider campaign to go after Sunni political figures in general and shore up Shiite control across the country.

There was no immediate claim of responsibility for the morning's violence. But the coordinated nature of the assault and the fact that the attacks took place in numerous neighborhoods suggested a planning capability only available to al-Qaida in Iraq.

Many of the neighborhoods were also Shiite areas which are a favorite target of al-Qaida. The Sunni extremist group often targets Shiites who they believe are not true Muslims.

U.S. military officials have said they're worried about a resurgence of al-Qaida after the American military leaves the country. If that happens, it could lead Shiite militants to fight back and attack Sunni targets, thus sending Iraq back to the sectarian violence it experienced just a few years ago.

Story: Iraq PM tells Kurds to hand over fugitive VP

Iraq's Sunni minority have felt marginalized since the rise of the Shiite majority in Iraq after the 2003 invasion.

Many Sunnis feel they have been shunted aside in the power-sharing agreement that Washington touts as a young democracy.
