Grant provides life planning, job readiness for young women ...

The Partnership for Families, Children and Adults in Chattanooga has received a $60,000 grant to offer young women training and guidance on job readiness and life planning.

Over the next two years, 55 young women between the ages of 12 and 24 years of age will be drawn from the Partnership's foster care network, the family violence center, and the 'building stable lives' program to participate in the new Career Quest offering funded by the grant.

Funding for Career Quest is provided by a Assets For Life grant from the National Crittenton Foundation though a $2 million gift Crittenton received from the Walmart Foundation.

"We hope that this will help young girls develop a better vision of themselves than might be their current view. That means visioning living out of poverty, living in safety and having healthy relationships," Partnership Chief Executive Officer Sandra Hollett said.

Upon completing the program, each participant will receive a $100 savings account thanks to an additional grant provided by Chattanooga-based Families Inc.

During a time when many non-profit agencies are experiencing funding cuts, Hollet said the new resources are a rare opportunity to build on existing programs and provide direct services without many constraints.

"Most grants that we receive have priorities set by the source of the money. This grant was really a collaborative process and we were able to choose from local priorities. We selected career development because we felt that was the most pressing issue for our young women," Hollett said.

"What makes this grant?which is called Assets for Life?unique is that its goal is to support and build on existing capacity. This means the funds are enabling agencies to ... expand current programs to serve more young women," according to the Crittenton Foundation website.

Hollett said the $60,360 grant received in Chattanooga will cover the cost of a part time job coach/trainer for a 24-month period. Client transportation and additional incidental costs will also be paid for by the grant.

The competencies and skills within the Partnership will also be enhanced by creating opportunities for current staff to work with the trainer who will be working with the clients.

"This is sustainable. We are taking the trainer approach so that at least five of our case managers will be able to deliver the content of the curriculum after the grant period," she said.

The agency is currently recruiting for the job coach position and Hollett said they hope to kick off the program by Oct. 15.

Several years ago I had an EGD and a colonoscopy. They found colonic mucusa with lymphoid hyperplasia in my colon on one of the biopsies. I was told to keep an eye on it. The doctor wouldn?t tell me much other than it is very rare. I went to another doctor due to loss of insurance and they told me it was normal to have. Never did a blood test or anything. I have swollen glands in different areas most of the time. Usually have at least one swollen somewhere daily. My sister had hodgkin?s disease. I don?t know what to reckon. I have many other health problems. But several of them could be MS, neuropathy, or lymphoma type cancers (the symptoms point to these) If anyone has any knowledge of lymphoid hyperplasia and what usually happens with it is much appreciated. I am in process of trying to get insurance to see neurologist. Just not sure if I should see another specialists also. Thanks in advance. Everything I have found about this hyperplasia is not much info.

Few health problems are caused by vaccines, review of studies suggests

ScienceDaily (Aug. 25, 2011) ? An analysis of more than 1,000 research articles concluded that few health problems are caused by or clearly associated with vaccines. A committee of experts convened by the Institute of Medicine to review the scientific literature on possible adverse effects of vaccines found convincing evidence of 14 health outcomes -- including seizures, inflammation of the brain, and fainting -- that can be caused by certain vaccines, although these outcomes occur rarely. It also found indicative though less clear data on associations between specific vaccines and four other effects, such as allergic reactions and temporary joint pain.

In addition, the evidence shows there are no links between immunization and some serious conditions that have raised concerns, including Type 1 diabetes and autism. The data were inadequate to reach conclusions about other suggested adverse effects.

The review will help the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) administer the Vaccine Injury Compensation Program (VICP). VICP is committed to using science-based evidence to inform its decisions about vaccine-related adverse effects, and HHS turned to IOM to provide a comprehensive review of study results on eight vaccines covered by the program. The report's findings will be useful to all stakeholders involved in vaccine compensation decisions, including VICP staff, people filing claims, special masters that rule on vaccine cases, and others.

Convincing evidence shows that the measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine can lead to fever-triggered seizures in some individuals, although these effects are almost always without long-term consequences, the report says. The MMR vaccine also can produce a rare form of brain inflammation in some people with severe immune system deficiencies. In a minority of patients, the varicella vaccine against chickenpox can induce brain swelling, pneumonia, hepatitis, meningitis, shingles, and chickenpox in immunocompromised patients as well as some who apparently have competent immune function, the committee found. The majority of these problems have occurred in individuals with immunodeficiencies, which increase individuals' susceptibility to the live viruses used in MMR and varicella. Six vaccines -- MMR, varicella, influenza, hepatitis B, meningococcal, and the tetanus-containing vaccines -- can trigger anaphylaxis, an allergic reaction that appears shortly after injection. And, in general, the injection of vaccines can trigger fainting and inflammation of the shoulder, the committee noted.

The evidence suggests that certain vaccines can lead to four other adverse effects, although the data on these links are not as convincing, the report says. The MMR vaccine appears to trigger short-term joint pain in some women and children. Some people can experience anaphylaxis after receiving the HPV vaccine. And certain influenza vaccines used abroad have resulted in a mild, temporary oculo-respiratory syndrome characterized by conjunctivitis, facial swelling, and mild respiratory symptoms.

The committee's review also concluded that certain vaccines are not linked to four specific conditions. The MMR vaccine and diphtheria-tetanus-acellular pertussis (DTaP) do not cause Type 1 diabetes, and the MMR vaccine does not cause autism, according to the results of several studies. The evidence shows that the flu shot does not cause Bell's palsy or exacerbate asthma. Suggestions that vaccines can lead to these serious health problems have contributed to parental concerns about immunization for their children.

Establishing a cause-and-effect relationship between an agent and a health outcome requires solid evidence. The committee's conclusions are based on the strengths and weaknesses of several types of evidence, including biological, clinical, and epidemiological research. In many cases of suggested vaccine-related adverse outcomes, there is too little evidence, or the available evidence offers conflicting results or is otherwise inadequate to draw conclusions.

"With the start of the new school year, it's time to ensure that children are up to date on their immunizations, making this report's findings about the safety of these eight vaccines particularly timely," said committee chair Ellen Wright Clayton, professor of pediatrics and law, and director, Center for Biomedical Ethics and Society, Vanderbilt University, Nashville, Tenn. "The findings should be reassuring to parents that few health problems are clearly connected to immunizations, and these effects occur relatively rarely. And repeated study has made clear that some health problems are not caused by vaccines."

In accordance with its charge, the committee focused solely on findings about potential risks of immunizations. It did not examine information that would have allowed it to draw conclusions about the ratio of benefits to risks. However, the committee members noted that deaths and disability due to infectious diseases have been dramatically reduced over the last century since the majority of vaccines were developed and brought into widespread use.

California Forests Show Extensive Damage from Insects, Fungi and Marijuana Cultivation (ContributorNetwork)

The USDA Forest Service released its 2010 "Forest Pest Conditions in California" report. Facts and figures indicate that the Golden State's forests are imperiled by native and invasive insect species. Adding insult to injury, invasive plants and fungi are also taking their tolls; so are the drug cartels.

* The invasive gold-spotted oak borer was imported via cut firewood from Arizona to California. Although its actual arrival time cannot be conclusively pinpointed, experts do suggest that its import happened "several years ago." In 2010, the insect was responsible for the deaths of approximately 1,500 oaks in the state.

* Root diseases also adversely affect California's trees. Port-Orford-cedar root disease has been found near the Fish Lake Campground in Humboldt County. Forest experts believe that human activity actually introduced the disease into the area. Containing the spread of the pathogen requires cooperation from locals and visitors. Signs in the area ask visitors to only travel on paved roads and trails; travel on soil -- especially when wet -- is highly discouraged. The spores are thought to travel on shoes and even tools; spread to healthy stands must be avoided.

* The native Jeffrey pine beetle killed fewer trees in California's northeastern portion last year. The same did not hold true for the San Gabriel Wilderness area, where the beetle's activity spiked. Roughly 299 trees were affected in this area alone; experts attribute the damage pattern to "high tree densities around Wrightwood."

* California's pine trees face their greatest danger from the mountain pine beetle. Around 2.800 lodge-pole pines in Siskiyou County alone became victims of the insects. Other areas are also affected, albeit to lesser extents. Aerial photos show large areas of forest where pines have died off and now stand out as brown spots among the green of still healthy specimens.

* The western pine beetle also damages large quantities of California pines. It is interesting to note that pine plantations record losses just like natural forest areas do. In addition, there are reports that associate marijuana site cleanup activities with an aggravation of beetle activity.

* Clandestine marijuana cultivation is an entirely man-made danger to California's trees. The US Forest Service highlights that -- aside from the danger to forest rangers and visitors from drug cartels -- the unchecked use of pesticides and herbicides in pot farming adversely affects soil, water and desirable plants. Endangered animals are killed as well. Estimates suggest that growers use as much as one pound of fertilizer for each six plants they tend during the growing seasons; with more than 30,000 plants grown, damage to groundwater quality and marine life is inevitable.

Steve Jobs quits as Apple CEO, Cook takes over (Reuters)

SAN FRANCISCO/LOS ANGELES (Reuters) ? Steve Jobs resigned as CEO of Apple Inc on Wednesday and passed the reins to his right-hand man Tim Cook, saying he could no longer fulfill the duties in a bombshell announcement that raised fears his health has deteriorated further.

Jobs, who fought and survived a rare form of pancreatic cancer and revolutionized the technology arena with the iPhone and the iPad in the past four years, is deemed the heart and soul of a company that this month briefly became the most valuable in America.

"I have always said if there ever came a day when I could no longer meet my duties and expectations as Apple's CEO, I would be the first to let you know. Unfortunately, that day has come," Jobs, who takes on the new position of chairman, said in a short letter announcing his resignation.

The letter and a separate terse, somewhat cryptic statement from Apple raised more questions than it answered about Jobs' health and the future of the company.

While it's unlikely that his departure as CEO will derail Apple's ambitious product-launch roadmap in the near term, there are concerns about whether the company would stay a creative force to be reckoned with beyond the next year or so without its founder and visionary at the helm.

That is why Apple's stock dropped as much as 7 percent in after-hours trading when Jobs' departure was announced.

In the company statement, Apple co-lead director Art Levinson on behalf of the board praised Jobs' "extraordinary vision and leadership" and "countless contributions to Apple's success", saying he would continue to serve the company with "unique insights, creativity and inspiration."

However, the statement, which also talked about Cook's outstanding performance, said nothing about Jobs' health.

His battle with pancreatic cancer, which has stretched over several years, has been of deep concern to Apple fans, investors and the company's board. Over the past two years, even board members have confided to friends their concern that Jobs, in his quest for privacy, wasn't being forthcoming with directors about the true condition of his health.

Jobs has been on medical leave since January 17, with his duties being filled by Cook, who was chief operating officer.

Jobs spent all Wednesday meeting with board members and top managers at Apple's headquarters at 1 Infinite Loop in Cupertino, and plans to remain active in his new role, a source close to Jobs told Reuters. A second source said Jobs will remain on the board of Walt Disney Co.

Still, some industry insiders express concern that Jobs' has clearly signaled he is too ill to keep up the punishing pace of a top executive job.

The 56-year-old Jobs had briefly emerged from medical leave in March to unveil the latest iPad and later attended a dinner hosted by President Barack Obama for technology leaders in Silicon Valley. But his often-gaunt appearance had sparked questions about how bad his illness was and his ability to continue at Apple.

In each of Jobs' three health-related absences, Cook has taken over the helm. But the 50-year-old Alabama native, a former Compaq executive and an acknowledged master of supply-chain management, remains largely untested in Wall Street's view.

That's partly why, despite Cook being viewed as a safe bet to run Apple's sprawling empire, some still think his boss will be very badly missed. One Silicon Valley CEO, who declined to be identified because of the sensitive issues involved, said the tone of Jobs' statement indicated his health might be worse than publicly known.

Jobs has earned a reputation for commanding every aspect of operations - from day-to-day running to broad strategic decisions - suggesting he would not have given up the job if he had a choice.

"It's really sad," the CEO told Reuters. "No one is looking at this as a business thing, but as a human thing. No one thinks that Steve is just stepping aside because he just doesn't want to be CEO of Apple anymore."

"It feels like another shoe is going to drop."

AGAIN, DEEP BENCH

Fans paid tribute but lamented his resignation, openly airing fears for the health of their technology guiding light. Employees at a downtown San Francisco Apple store huddled in small groups after the news spread through word of mouth.

"Not gonna lie - I teared up upon the #stevejobs news," said Bob Skrezyna, who goes by 'wordrebel' on Twitter.

Some reactions were put in crudely poetic, though somewhat poignant, terms. One Apple fan from Denmark posted on Facebook: "Good Job. I just ate an Apple. It was bittersweet. Guess I'll just have to Cook it from now on."

Others simply sympathized.

"It's sad to see someone visibly deteriorating and to see such a giant going through this. My heart goes out to his wife and kids," said Kelli Praught, an employee at a Palo Alto business who has served Jobs' wife.

The news caused immediate ripples in Asia, where many of the company's major suppliers and rivals are based. Samsung Electronics, Apple's top chip supplier and a major rival in smartphones and tablets, rose 3 percent in early trade, though part of that was because of a patent ruling in a court battle with Apple in the Netherlands. Sony Corp, which was overtaken by Apple in the personal music and tablet space, rose 1 percent.

While Jobs did not detail the state of his health, oncologists who have not treated the Apple founder said he could be facing several problems tied to his rare form of pancreatic cancer and subsequent liver transplant. They include possible hormone imbalances or a recurrence of cancer that is harder to fight once the body has already been weakened.

"I have to imagine that it's related to his health. I cannot imagine another explanation," said Jason Hirschhorn of The ReDEF Group, and the former CEO of MySpace.

His resignation certainly marked the end of an era at Apple.

A college dropout, a Buddhist and a son of adoptive parents, he started Apple Computer with friend Steve Wozniak in the late 1970s.

The company soon introduced the Apple 1 computer. But it was the Apple II that became a huge success and gave Apple its position as a critical player in the then-nascent PC industry, culminating in a 1980 IPO that made Jobs a multimillionaire.

Despite the subsequent success of the Mac, Jobs' relationship with top management and the board soured. The company removed most of his powers and then in 1985 he was fired.

Apple's fortunes waned after that. However, its purchase of NeXT -- the computer company Jobs founded after leaving Apple -- in 1997 brought him back into the fold. Later that year, he became interim CEO and in 2000, the company dropped "interim" from his title.

But it was the iPhone in 2007 that cemented his legacy in the annals of modern technology history. Two years before the gadget that forever transformed the way people around the world access and use the Internet, Jobs talked about how a sense of his mortality was a major driver behind that vision.

"Remembering that I'll be dead soon is the most important tool I've ever encountered to help me make the big choices in life," Jobs said during a Stanford commencement ceremony in 2005. "Because almost everything -- all external expectations, all pride, all fear of embarrassment or failure -- these things just fall away in the face of death, leaving only what is truly important."

"Remembering that you are going to die is the best way I know to avoid the trap of thinking you have something to lose. You are already naked. There is no reason not to follow your heart."

Google Inc Chairman Eric Schmidt, a friend of Jobs for years before the Internet search giant's move into mobile software and devices strained their relationship, wrote a moving testament to the legacy of his erstwhile business partner, echoing the responses of many of his fellow Silicon Valley executives on Wednesday.

"Steve Jobs is the most successful CEO in the U.S. of the last 25 years, "he said. "He uniquely combined an artist's touch and an engineer's vision to build an extraordinary company... One of the greatest American leaders in history."

Wall Street once again expressed confidence in the Apple bench, headed by supply-chain maven Cook.

"I will say to investors: don't panic and remain calm, it's the right thing to do. Steve will be chairman and Cook is CEO," said BGC Financial analyst Colin Gillis.

On Wednesday, Apple shares slid to $357.40 in extended trading after a brief halt. They had gained 0.7 percent to close at $376.18 on the Nasdaq.

"Investors are very comfortable with Tim Cook even though Jobs has been a driver of innovation and clearly an Apple success. Tim has shown Apple can still outperform extremely well when he's been acting as CEO," said Cross Research analyst Shannon Cross.

Apple previously did not have a chairman. The company had said it didn't need one, the structure worked best for shareholders, and that it preferred to rely on two independent co-lead directors.

In his letter of just eight short sentences that was addressed to the board and Apple community, Jobs said: "I hereby resign as CEO of Apple. I would like to serve, if the Board sees fit, as Chairman of the Board, director and Apple employee."

They did see fit.

More Somali famine victims fleeing to Yemen: UNHCR (Reuters)

NAIROBI (Reuters) ? There has been a jump in the number of Somalis, hit by famine, instability and high food prices who are fleeing to Yemen instead of other countries in the drought-ridden Horn of Africa region, the U.N. refugee agency said.

Some 3.7 million Somalis are at risk of starvation in the worst drought in decades and most of those are from five areas in the rebel-controlled south where famine has been declared.

Kenya, with nearly 498,000 Somali refugees, is the largest host country, and at one point 1,500 refugees a day were arriving at Kenya's sprawling, overcrowded Dadaab refugee camp near the border with Somalia.

"Recently, however, the pace of arrivals to the Dadaab refugee complex has slowed to 1,000-1,200 people per day," the UNHCR said in a briefing on Friday.

"Bucking the trend of the slowing outflow in the Horn of Africa, Yemen is seeing a sharp rise in the number of Somali refugees arriving on rickety boats across the Gulf of Aden," the agency said, adding that more than 3,700 refugees had reached Yemen's coast in August.

The drought has put some 12 million people at risk across Kenya, Ethiopia, Djibouti and Somalia, and the fact that Somali refugees are making the dangerous voyage to conflict-hit Yemen instead of staying on the continent, highlights their desperate situation.

Yemen is host to the second-largest Somali refugee population, with nearly 192,000. About 15,000 of those have arrived since in January, UNHCR said.

"They cross the Gulf of Aden on what are often unseaworthy and overcrowded boats. Many do not survive the dangerous crossing," UNHCR said.

The agency said it expected more refugees to arrive in Somalia over the next months, but thought they were waiting for calmer seas.

The route is also often used by migrants who pay smugglers to get them to Yemen, seen as a gateway to wealthier parts of the Middle East.

The UNHCR said there was a "significant drop" in the number of Somalis arriving in the capital, Mogadishu, hoping there will be more access to food aid there than in regions where al Shabaab militants are still restricting aid groups' operations.

After withdrawing from Mogadishu earlier this month, al Qaeda-inspired al Shabaab is placing more restrictions on the movement of people, particularly men, in the areas under its control in the Lower Shabelle and Bay regions.

"The average daily arrival rate in the city (Mogadishu) dropped from more than 1,000 per day last month to an estimated 200 in August," the UNHCR said.

In southern Somalia's al Shabaab-controlled Kismayu, witnesses said malnourished children were dying because of the lack of food aid.

Aid agencies estimate tens of thousands of children have already died because of the drought.

"We buried four children who died in the IDP camps of Kismayu, because they cannot reach other destinations," clan leader Yusuf Harun Ali told Reuters earlier this week.

Bernanke?s big speech could rattle the markets

Whether the Federal Reserve likes it or not, its unprecedented monetary polices over the last few years have conditioned the financial markets to expect a helping hand when the going gets tough.

That's why all eyes will be on Ben Bernanke, the central bank's chairman, when he speaks Friday at the Fed's annual symposium in Jackson Hole, Wyoming.

With the stock market mired in a month-long slump and both the U.S. and euro zone economies in danger of sliding into recession, investors are bracing for a possible repeat of last year's performance, when Bernanke hinted the Fed would act if conditions deteriorated.

Two months later, the central bank began pumping $600 billion into the financial system through direct purchases of Treasury debt, a second round of stimulus that markets dubbed "QE2."

While the jury's still out on how effective these purchases have been, few are ready to rule out QE3 entirely.

Wyoming may conjure up images of the American Wild West, but markets aren't expecting Bernanke to ride into the mountain resort with guns blazing -- at least not yet.

While the economy has taken a turn for the worse -- growth ground to a halt in the second quarter and nearly flat-lined in the first -- there's a sense that the Fed will want to wait a bit longer to assess the impact of its past stimulus.

Other Fed policymakers have sought to downplay expectations of an imminent QE3 announcement. St. Louis Fed President James Bullard was quoted in Japan's Nikkei newspaper saying that while the Fed could buy more bonds if the economy weakened, the time was not right for such a move.

"Going into Bernanke's speech at Jackson Hole, people are positioned for a significant shift in policy. (But) we think financial market conditions have to deteriorate even further for more QE3," said Simon Derrick, head of currency research at Bank of New York Mellon.

Nonetheless, traders are still expecting Bernanke to signal in some shape or form that he hasn't run out of bullets and could start shooting again if need be.

"Based on our conversations with clients, we believe investors would be very surprised if the speech did not include a discussion of asset purchases," strategists at Goldman Sachs wrote in a note to clients.

They said this could involve the Fed reinvesting proceeds from maturing assets into 10- and 30-year Treasuries to hold long-term interest rates low.

"I think we'll see (QE3) because America needs growth, but I don't think we'll necessarily get it on Friday," said Neil Dwane, chief investment officer for Europe at RCM.

Current market moves reflect this. While still down about 15 percent from late July, the S&P 500 rallied smartly Tuesday and the dollar has struggled against major currencies.

More stock market gains could be in store if Bernanke gives a strong hint of future action. After Bernanke's speech last August, the S&P 500 began a rally that took it up nearly 25 percent by May 2011.

Pulling the trigger now would have the element of surprise going for it and might spark the most aggressive market moves.

There's been some talk in bond market circles that the 10-year yield's dip below 2 percent reflected a pricing in of QE3, though those moves probably had more to do with recent dismal jobs, manufacturing and growth data.

Still, there are impediments to launching QE3.

For one thing, Bernanke already caught investors off guard earlier this month and slowed a market rout when the Fed pledged to keep interest rates near zero until at least 2013.

Steven Bell, director of GLC Ltd, a global macro hedge fund in London with $1 billion in assets, also noted that higher inflation may make the Fed cautious. "We have core inflation going up," he said. "It may be low but it's still going up."

Political opposition is also on the rise. Texas Governor Rick Perry, a candidate for president, even said he would consider it "treasonous" if Bernanke "prints more money between now and the election" in 2012.

That populist anger stems partly from the fact that Fed policies have done little to increase hiring or spark a housing market recovery.

"The history is $600 billion (in bond purchases) hasn't really made any difference to the U.S. economy," Dwane said. "It's still where it was when he was talking about it last August: nearly in recession."

If QE3 fails to boost growth or stokes inflation, markets may wish the Fed had done nothing.

"Investors are becoming more cynical," said Jack Ablin, chief investment officer at Harris Private Bank in Chicago. "Central bankers and governments seem to playing the role of the Dutch boy trying to plug holes in the dike."

A humdrum speech that neither announces plans for QE3 or even hints at the Fed's willingness to act is probably the most unlikely scenario, as far as markets are concerned.

If Bernanke did go that way, it could signal that the hawks were gaining the upper hand. Three Fed policymakers voted against extending the zero interest rate pledge to 2013 and have argued that the Fed cannot do much more to boost growth.

Fred Dickson, market strategist at D.A. Davidson & Co, noted that policy remains very loose even without QE3. In addition to holding rates near zero, the Fed has said it will reinvest the proceeds of maturing assets on its "extraordinarily large" $2.8 trillion balance sheet.

"So they have a stealth QE3 policy in place already," he said.

No mention of future easing would likely hurt stocks but should spark a short-term dollar rally. Treasuries would likely fall as expectations of more Fed support faded.

"The Interrupters" refers to the brave group of people, all of whom who have grown up in Chicago and whom in their past have experienced first hand the drugs, violence, and incarceration that practically seems predetermined in some areas, and who now talk to individuals and groups and act as peacekeepers, or, where necessary, 'interrupters' literally putting themselves in the midst of dangerous scenes to stop violence escalating, and to prevent retaliatory violence and shootings. The documentary concentrates on three of these interrupters and offers throughout the film details about the pasts and what they now do in CeaseFire. Often times their role might just be to listen to what people are saying, or to calm them down, and sometimes they might have to be much more involved. We get to follow some of the people they are working with or the groups they are involved with, and they run the gamut from working one-to-one to get estranged brothers talking to themselves and their mother, through to work with classes of schoolchildren on anti-violence projects, through to speaking at funerals to beg for the violence to stop, or to ensure the people their are with make a promise to not retaliate - all of which has varying but absolutely noticeable effect in terms of violence committed. One especially powerful moment shows one of the interrupters literally breaking up a fight in the moment rocks are thrown - surely preventing murder on the streets in broad daylight. Though clocking in at nearly three hours, there's barely a frame that seems misplaced and if anything the film could have been even more exhaustive (we barely see for example, the involvements of police or government aside from a few news clips and archive footage) though this would surely have been at the expensive of the personal stories, all of which are touching. The Interrupters themselves should be seen as nothing less than heroes; their work is valuable and certainly saves lives.*

India coach Fletcher faces dilemma, says Wessels (Reuters)

JOHANNESBURG (Reuters) ? India coach Duncan Fletcher faces a dilemma after player power and a lack of discipline helped account for India's 4-0 series loss to England, according to former South Africa captain Kepler Wessels.

Wessels, a well travelled television commentator, told Reuters on Thursday that former coach Gary Kirsten allowed the senior players to run the team.

"The general consensus is that Fletcher was appointed as long as he continued with the same coaching style as Gary Kirsten. The senior players wanted that, they wanted Gary to stay on, but when that didn't happen, they wanted a like-for-like replacement," he said.

"Gary allowed the senior players and superstars to run the show and do their own thing. But then the team arrived in England totally unprepared, there was no dedicated approach and no hunger there. India need a much firmer hand, superstars or not," Wessels told Reuters on Thursday.

Wessels said Fletcher was now "between a rock and a hard place".

"If he agreed to go with the Kirsten approach, he can't change now. The situation is crying out for more control and a firm hand, but if he does flex his muscles, the players won't like it and it is unclear whether the board will sanction a different approach," he said.

The former opening batsman, who was renowned for his gritty, disciplined approach during his 16 tests for South Africa and 24 for Australia, said India could not compete with an England team run by team director Andy Flower.

"Flower takes a hard line, he's meticulous on fitness, there are no short cuts and he sets very high standards. The players and management can either buy into it or not be part of the team. He runs a very tight ship and the players have bought into it," he said.

"The England players are technically very good at the moment in all three disciplines of the game. Due to their superior fitness and technical expertise, they have become used to winning, which has made them mentally strong and ruthless in their pursuit of excellence."

Gadhafi vows to fight until 'victory or death'





>>> good evening from new york. i'm melissa harris-perry in for lawrence o'donnell. colonel moammar gadhafi 's whereabouts are still unknown, but moments ago he addressed the libyan people in a radio address, he vowed martyrdom or victory. it was a tactical move after his compound was rebelled to the ground by 64 nato air strikes . that proceeded the invasion of rebel allies into the compound earlier today. some looted the compound. outside, rebel fighters climbed on a bronze statue of a fist clutching a u.s. f-16 fighter jet , a sculpture gadhafi commissioned. inside the compound and throughout tripoli , pockets of loyalist forces continue to resist rebel advances. rebels say battle in tripoli have left more than 400 dead. last night, gadhafi 's son spoke with reports where fighting continued outside and pro- gadhafi gunmen in the lobby refused to let the journalists inside leave. saif said his father is in a secure location in tripoli and claimed the loyalists are winning the battle and said "to held with the icc." the international court with a warrant for his arrest. a nato spokesman urged caution in italy today.

>> we have to remain vigilant and to continue to protect the civilian population . most notably, tripoli is still the site of nervous clashes between pro- and anti- gadhafi forces. this is very, very dynamic and complex.

>> it's stunning, what is your reaction to gadhafi 's continued defiance tonight?

>> that was somewhat predictable, but it certainly does not bode well. if he continues to be defiant, is a fugitive, and leading some pockets of resistance, this means more violence and it will be that much more harder for this council to exert real control. they say they are going to move to tripoli , but first they have to quiet the storm there. they've managed to get his found compound, but he has other places to hide. his son and heir is moving around tripoli so openly, brazenly, inviting journalists to follow him in his car and go to night spots and shouting to supporters is certainly not a good sign either.

>> i think this brings me to how many are feeling in the newsrooms, this is a good news and bad news situation. around noon we are watching all of these amazing reports with richard engle, getting goose bumps about the notion of liberation, you told us some of the bad news, what is other bad news about the possibility of this dictatorship being over?

>> it's weaponry, it's the hidden stocks, they think they have a good handle, the u.s. does and nato , on where the chemical weapons are and those sites have not been plundered, but that said, there's a lot of dangerous siren gas and mustard gas and other nuclear weapons and nuclear components. he gave up most of his nuclear components in 2006 , but whether or not he has other weapons stockpiled remains to be seen. then there are the shoulder-fired missiles and rocket-propelled grenades, the other weapons he can use, particularly the weapons he can use to bring down civilian aircraft and whether or not they've been plundered and moved outside of libya to other terror nations or terror groups.

>> let me follow up on the question of the control of the weapons, because even if everything goes at the very best, if tomorrow gadhafi were captured and this were over, the fact is although dictators are horrible, they can be good at keeping control at fractured countries, so what happens in a country where it doesn't -- it's at least seemed to me completely clear the n.t.c. is in control of this situation, i mean, you have named for us some real dangers. what should we be looking for in terms of the transition?

>> well, nato and the u.n. and state department have been working closely with the t.n.c. for several months now and believe they are committed to trying to exert control and control the weapons and create civil society , it's going to be tough, no question about that, these are tribal factions and a lot of internal bickering, but they have said the right things, made the right moves, we have interviewed people with them, spent several days with them, there's an arab league meeting in doha today and in paris after that, so the international community is working very closely with them, but can they exert control, is this a week-long process, a matter of 72 hours , there's a real danger point here until they can either find gadhafi or quell the resistance. he could be on the lam the way sudan hussein was. when he was insighting more violence from his loyalists.

>> particularly with that comparison, what are the white house and nato thinking about how long this is going to take. i mean, is there any possibility here the u.s. is going to end up with a higher level of involvement?

>> i don't think you will see boots on the ground , as it were, i think you'll see a larger intelligence force, covert force, special ops trying to help, but there have been nato and british and french on the ground already. we've had a supportive role on the air strikes , which were critical in helping the rebel group advance finally on tripoli . i think success is fairly predictable in a military context, but civil disorder is certainly something that is almost -- almost likely to happen.

>> now, again on this question of civil disorder , there is a sort of moment of the son being out and about almost challenging, obviously, international law , challenging the journalists. is this sort of par for the course , or is this an extraordinary moment?

>> well, that was pretty extraordinary. he is an interesting character to say the least, because he was british educated. he was always welcome in foreign capitals. he was the advance man for his father with the west and in advancing the normalization of relations with the u.s. with the bush administration , which was supported by the obama administration as well, because they decided based on representations from him, and he has met, you know, he goes to davos and meets with foreign journalists and think tank people, so he was pretty acceptable, until the arab spring, until he repeated his father's bloody threats against the people of benghazi when the protests erupted, so up until that point he was considered the good guy and he was blamed by hard liners within the regime because he persuaded his father to give up the nuclear equipment that could have led to nuclear weapons , and so they basically gave up their bargaining chips, and the message some fear this is going to deliver to iran, to north korea , to syria, if syria can hold on, is don't give up your weapons, because that's your last bargaining chip to prevent nato air strikes .
