Man found masturbating on college campus accused of bike thefts

LOUISVILLE, KY (WAVE) - A man accused of stealing dozens of bicycles and selling them to full a drug habit was taken into custody after he was found masturbating in a college restroom.

According to Louisville Metro police, Michael Smith, 39, stole approximately $10,000 worth of bikes, each in under one minute, by cutting cable locks.

Police reports state on July 2 Smith stole a bicycle from the YMCA located on 2nd Street, another on July 7 in the 400 block of West Market Street and a third on July 15 in the 300 block of West Chestnut Street.

A Jefferson Community and Technical College security officer found Smith naked and masturbating in a 2nd floor bathroom on the schools campus at around 1 p.m. Thursday. The security officer told police Smith had come to the campus several times and often left behind drug paraphernalia.

Smith is charged with criminal trespassing, giving an officer a false name, theft by unlawful taking

US indicts SAC Capital Advisors on fraud charges, but not owner Steven A. Cohen

fraud

One of the largest-ever insider trading cases took a giant step forward Thursday, when a federal grand jury indicted Steven A. Cohen's hedge fund SAC Capital Advisors on fraud charges.

The hedge fund was charged with wire fraud as well as four counts of securities fraud, and the government is seeking to force SAC to surrender any fraud-related profits. The charges could undermine one of Wall Street's top stock trading firms, although they do not touch founder Steven A. Cohen.

The Securities and Exchange Commission recently filed civil charges against Cohen for what it said was a failure to adequately supervise the people at his firm. Last week a spokesman for Cohen said the SEC charges have no merit.

According to the indictment from roughly 1999 to 2010, SAC obtained and traded on inside information to boost returns and fees and that the scheme involved a number of portfolio managers, research analysts and dozens of publicly traded companies.

The government is also seeking to force SAC to surrender any fraud-related profits.

The criminal charges said SAC's "relentless pursuit of an information 'edge' fostered a business culture within SAC in which there was no meaningful commitment to ensure that such 'edge' came from legitimate research and not inside information."

It added: "The predictable and foreseeable result, as charged herein, was systematic insider trading by the SAC entity defendants resulting in hundreds of millions of dollars of illegal profits and avoided losses at the expense of members of the investing public."

The indictment said SAC carried out the insider trading scheme with a staff of numerous portfolio managers and research analysts "who engaged in a pattern of obtaining insider information from dozens of publicly-traded companies across multiple industry sectors."

It said SAC sought to hire portfolio managers and research analysts with proven access to public company contacts likely to possess inside information. The managers and analysts were then not questioned when they made trading recommendations that appeared to be based on inside information, the indictment said.

The problem was compounded when SAC on numerous occasions failed to use effective compliance procedures or practices designed to root out wrongdoing. The pursuit of a trading edge overwhelmed limited SAC compliance systems, prosecutors said.

A spokesman for SAC and a lawyer for Cohen did not immediately respond to messages for comment Thursday.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

Iphone or Blackberry for police?

My agency currently provides Blackberries, mainly because of the push to talk function. Most of the officers in the unit (it's a surveillance unit, so no routine patrol stuff) dislike the Blackberry and were looking into upgrading to Iphones. Mainly because of the ease of use and the updated technology. I'd be curious to hear if other officers can see any benefits in using Iphones. And if so, what might they be? Here's a few benefits I thought of...
- Iphone is easier to use, allows you to look up info quicker.
- With google maps you can view satellite images, views of fronts of residences and backyards and even rotate around. All of this can be viewed while in the field. This is especially handy when planning out search warrant operations.
- If you do not have your normal camera on you (for evidence, etc), Iphones take better pictures than Blackberries. You can take photos of victims, suspects, etc.
- It is easier to share information, apps, data, locations, etc with Iphones.
- Blackberries are extremely cumbersome to navigate. Iphones are the opposite.
- Limitless apps, some that can assist with suspect identification.
- easier to take notes (or dicatate) with Iphone.
- I believe there are GPS apps that you can turn on and everyone can see where the other team members are at. This would be helpful in large surveillance ops where team members are spread out. I believe this improves officer safety.

I don't know if the approving board would be willing to shell out money for new phones when we already have working phones with the Blackberries. That's why I thought I would throw this out there. Anything else you can think of? Or if you think Blackberries are better, please let me know why. I'm just trying to figure out what is the best option for my unit. Thanks.

Re-Drafting 2013 NBA Draft Based on Summer League Revelations

    6. Philadelphia 76ers: Nerlens Noel
    7. Sacramento Kings: Ben McLemore
    8. Detroit Pistons: C.J. McCollum
    9. Utah Jazz: Dennis Schroeder
    10. Portland Trail Blazers: Michael Carter-Williams

    Our first changes!

The New Orleans Pelicans still pull off their huge trade with the Philadelphia 76ers and take Nerlens Noel for them here. Noel's stock is right where it was.

Ben McLemore had a very up-and-down summer league. He scored over 25 points twice, but he also registered 18 turnovers and zero assists. Still, the Sacramento Kings like his potential as a pure scorer and are willing to deal with the games where he puts the blinders on and ignores everyone else on the floor.?

The Detroit Pistons welcome the point guard help and the scoring C.J. McCollum brings to the table and pass on Kentavious Caldwell-Pope. No one looked more dangerous in isolation than McCollum, and the elite ball-handling skills win out over Caldwell-Pope's shaky shooting performance in Orlando.

The Utah Jazz still trade up for a point guard, but this time, it's for Dennis Schroeder. Trey Burke's brutal shooting performance and complete inability to score at the rim in Orlando greased the wheels for the choice, but give credit to Schroeder as well.

Drawing comparisons to Rajon Rondo, Schroeder defended his position very effectively and showed natural point guard instincts. Utah hopes the team can make up for the dip in scoring elsewhere.

The Portland Trail Blazers are bummed that McCollum is no longer there, but they get to team up Damian Lillard with some size and take Michael Carter-Williams. MCW struggled mightily as a scorer in Orlando, but he gamely distributed and rebounded, providing an interesting backcourt mate for last season's rookie of the year.

Apple wobbles in China as rivals offer more, for less

    SAN FRANCISCO/HONG KONG | Wed Jul 24, 2013 5:50am EDT

SAN FRANCISCO/HONG KONG (Reuters) - A sharp drop in Apple Inc's China revenue in April-June underscores the challenges it faces in its second-largest market as the technology gap with cheaper local rivals narrows and as Samsung Electronics keeps up a steady stream of new models across all price ranges.

While investors marked up Apple shares as the company sold more of its iPhones than expected, the stock rally may prove short-lived as demand for its products fades in China. Analysts predict Apple will lose market share in the world's leading smartphone sector.

"There's some cannibalization of Apple's market share from competitive mid-tier models that cost a lot less and perform as well, from vendors such as Xiaomi and Vivo," said Huang Leping, an analyst at Nomura in Hong Kong, referring to rival Chinese models.

Salespeople at several electronics shops in Hong Kong said South Korea's Samsung was a bigger hit with consumers as it offers more products. Some display counters didn't carry any Apple devices.

"Samsung products have enjoyed greater sales than Apple as many mainland (Chinese) tourists tend to buy Samsung due to a greater variety of models with a wider price range," said a saleswoman at a Hong Kong computer centre. "That's why we stock more Samsung products."

    SLIPPING DOWN

In the first quarter of this year, Apple ranked top in Hong Kong with 46 percent market share in smartphones, though that was down from 54 percent in the last quarter of 2012, according to market research firm Canalys.

Even without releasing a new product, Apple sold 31.2 million iPhones in its fiscal third quarter, around a fifth more than analysts had predicted. But revenue from all Apple products in Greater China, which includes Hong Kong and Taiwan, slumped 43 percent from the previous quarter and was down 14 percent from a year earlier - worrying in a region where smartphone penetration is still low.

Greater China accounted for 13 percent of Apple's sales, or $5 billion, in April-June - down from nearly 19 percent in the previous quarter. Hong Kong was a particularly weak spot. "It's not totally clear exactly why that occurred," CEO Tim Cook said on a conference call with analysts.

"In the past three months, the number of mainland Chinese consumers of Apple products dropped about 50 percent," said Sunny Tang, a salesperson at another Hong Kong electronics store that sells Apple products. "Android (Google's operating system in many Samsung phones) is much better than Apple, and in that period Samsung released at least five phones and tablets."

Nicole Peng Luping at Canalys said: "China is a very diverse market so you need to have very diverse products to serve different levels of customers - and that's the weakness for Apple."

    HEATING UP

In the first quarter, Apple ranked 5th in China with 9.7 percent market share, well behind leader Samsung with 17.7 percent, and lagging, among others, Lenovo Group Ltd and Huawei Technologies, which said on Wednesday it was on track to hit 10 percent revenue growth this year.

Nomura's Huang expects Apple's China market share to slip 1-2 percentage points in the coming quarters as the novelty of the iPhone 5 fades and as new buyers opt for cheaper smartphones.

The global battle for mobile supremacy is not just between Apple and Samsung. Huawei and ZTE Corp are growing across their Chinese home base, and South Korea's LG Electronics said on Wednesday it sold a record 12.1 million smartphones in April-June, more than double its year-ago sales.

As high-end smartphone sales hit a plateau, the $2 trillion industry - telecom carriers, handset makers and content providers - is buckling up for a bumpier ride as growth shifts to emerging markets, primarily in Asia.

Even excluding China, Apple's revenue in Asia Pacific fell 35 percent quarter-on-quarter.

CEO Cook, who has seen Apple stock fall by more than a fifth so far this year, blamed China's slowing economic growth, but said he remained bullish on that market. The "economy clearly doesn't help us, nor others," he told analysts.

He said, however, that the revenue numbers don't tell the whole story. Apple books revenue when it sells to resellers, who then sell the products to consumers. Sales to consumers - or sell-through - slipped just 4 percent in Greater China from a year ago. By that same measure, mainland Chinese sell-through sales actually rose 5 percent year-on-year, though that was a deceleration in growth, Cook said.

    WEB TRAFFIC

Beyond the Asia weakness, Apple's sales of its iPad - the device that catapulted tablet computing into the mainstream - underperformed. Apple shipped 14.6 million tablets in April-June, some way below rough estimates.

Some investors argue that Apple's hold on a market it created is likely to slip as rival smartphone makers as well as Google and Amazon.com Inc pile in, but Cook noted that usage data shows the iPad still commands a dominant share of Web traffic.

"iPad accounts for 84 percent of the Web traffic from tablets," he said. "So if there are lots of other tablets selling, I don't know what they are being used for."

Given the pressures and increasing competition, Apple's stock rally should not be seen as proof that concerns over its outlook have abated, some analysts said. "It's nice to see a bit of a beat for a change," said Hudson Square Research analyst Daniel Ernst. But "earnings are still down year over year."

"It's going to take a new product introduction before we see earnings turn positive."
