Many of these properties have marshy areas that can carry an odor when the tides go out each day. Some of the homes that wish to have boat access along these canals will also have to make sure that there are no bridge height restrictions to get out into the Intracoastal Waterway or Atlantic Ocean. Some boats will not fit under bridges that are too short or do not have a draw span. Many homes for sale will advertise whether or not you can have boat access.

The city is actually one of only two seaports found in the state of North Carolina. This port area separates Morehead City from historic Beaufort, NC.
