Bulletins Live ? Protect your home and family from burglars

Tuesday, August 9, 2011

This summer Sioux Falls police say burglaries and larcenies have been on the rise all over the city. They say its happening mainly becausepeople leave their homes, cars, and bikes unlocked.Wednesday we look at some ways to keep you and your property safe.

Recently Sioux Falls police say unlocked bikes have been taken from yards and pools, items have been stolen out of unlocked cars, and thieves have walked right into open garages and stolen items. Sioux Falls police say they cant urge you enough to lock your doors, and to keep your possessions out of site.

If you leave your garage door open for a pet, you may want to reconsider. It doesnt take a person a lot of room to get inside your garage. Also you may want to tie up your emergency garage door release. Sometimes those can be reached with a tool from the outside, and opened. Also make sure you are locking the door that goes from your garage into your house.

If you are heading out of town on vacation, first of all make sure you lock up before you leave. Also have a neighbor get your mail, and cut your grass if you will be gone for a longer period of time. You also may want to consider having a light timer to turn on your lights from time to time.

Also it may sound strange but many security experts say you should keep the hedges around your home trimmed. This way it doesnt give a burglar a place to hide. Pushbutton locks on doorknobs are easy for burglars to open. Install deadbolt locks on all your outside doors. Sliding glass doors are vulnerable. Special locks are available for better security.

The overall theme is definitely lock your doors, even if you are gone for short periods of time. Sioux Falls police say these crimes have been random, which means everyone needs to be locking their property.
