Sports Briefs: Youth soccer camp at Kahle starts Monday

Whittell High School varsity soccer coach, Steve Maltase, with help from current and former varsity players, will be conducting a youth soccer camp at Kahle Community Park July 9-13. The camp is open to kids as young as 4 years old, and up. Participants need to bring lunch, water bottle and sunscreen, along with shin guards and soccer cleats.

All-Comers meet Thursdays

The Lake Tahoe Track Club is holding All-Comers meets on Thursday evenings. The weekly track meets will begin at 5:45 p.m. and go until it is too dark to compete. All ages are welcome.

The cost is $5 to enter and compete, and is free for kids under 9 years old. The meet will be held at South Tahoe Community Youth Sports Complex, and will feature five field events and 17 track events. For more information, visit www.adsportstahoe.com.


Lake Tahoe Track Club summer camps July 16-20

A five-day pole vault camp and track camp will be run by the Lake Tahoe Track Club July 16-20 at the Community Youth Sports Complex, which is located behind South Tahoe Middle School according to a press release from organizers of the event.

The pole vault camp will be led by Paul Heglar and Chris Moore, for ages 12-18. The camp will run from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. and cost $150 for each athlete, and $350 with hotel for the week. The five-hour days will include video analysis, functional training techniques, conditioning, event-specific drills and vaulting. Athletes will receive a camp T-shirt and written report card.

The track camp will coincide with the pole vault camp at the Community Youth Sports Complex during the week. The camp, for ages 8-14 years old, will run from 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. and cost $150.

According to a press release from camp organizer, Anthony Davis, the camp is designed to improve the cardiovascular endurance, flexibility, strength and energy level of each student to prepare them for participation in a particular season sports program. Focus will be placed on learning the proper techniques of running, sprinting, speed, agility, power and stretching to prevent injuries.

Participants will be asked to express their critical thinking and writing skills in quizzes and a one-page essay about any type of sporting event they are involved. Class will close with a six-a-thon competition assessment, handout samples of year round health and conditioning workouts.

Ponderosa Ridge Run Saturday

On Saturday, July 7, the 38th Annual Ponderosa Ridge Run will be held. Starting at the Spooner Summit Maintenance Station at 10 a.m., it covers 9.5 miles of dirt road.

Survivor ribbons and cold drinks will be waiting runners at the end of the point-to-point race. The race will feature steep hills, no aid stations, no pre-race sign ups and only asks for a $2 donation. For more info call Austin Angell at 530-541-5224.


Swim meet this weekend

The Tahoe Swim Club will have their annual swim meet July 8-10. The event will start Friday afternoon, 3-6 p.m., and continue Saturday, 8-5 p.m., and Sunday, 8-4 p.m., at the South Tahoe Recreation and Swimming Pool Complex. Over 400 swimmers are signed up from all over California and Nevada. Athletes from 4 to 17 years old will be participating.

It is open to the public and there is no charge for admission.


Tahoe Firecracker Trail Trek July 4

The second annual Tahoe Firecracker Trail Trek will be held at Incline Middle School on Wednesday to benefit the Incline High School boys and girls cross country team. The 5K run/walk and kid's race is part of the Red. White and Tahoe Blue activities.

There are separate races for kids and adults. Races start and finish at the Incline Middle School basketball courts, consisting of paved surfaces and dirt trails, and is a relatively flat course.


Free Fishing Day is Saturday, July 7

The California Department of Fish and game announced in a press release that Saturday, July 7, is free fishing day. It is the first of two days this year that anglers can hit the waters without a sport fishing license.

The release said all fishing regulations, such as bag and size limits, gear restrictions, report card requirements, fishing hours and stream closures remain in effect. Fishing in Lake Tahoe tributaries has opened for the season.
