He said within moments of the show revealing that he was starring in A Tale Of Two Cities he was targeted by internet trolls.
As his audition aired on ITV1, Paul Clayton messaged: 'What an unprofessional greedy little s**t. Get back to the job you should be rehearsing.'
And Wendy Browning said: 'Still a t**t I see,' before Desi Corcoran posted: 'What a rat Jonathan Ansell is'.
The singer told The Sun that he felt like he had been assaulted and that he felt 'battered and bruised' after the series of attacks from members of the public.
'It was shocking how many people targeted me with expletives. I was called all the worst names you can think of. You kind of just go, "wow". I couldn?t believe some of the things that were being written,' he added.
The tenor also revealed that Superstar judge Jason Donovan also gave him a dressing down off camera for his decision to audition for the show while rehearsing for A Tale Of Two Cities.
'That did upset me - I thought he of all people should have understood. But perhaps he didn?t know it didn?t clash with the show long-term,' the tenor explained.
