Cub Cadet's RZT-S Zero is an electric zero-turn mower that I took for a test drive last week in Jamison, Penn. at Star Lawn Mower, Inc. I've been cutting grass a long time?40 years or so?and I have to say that it's a remarkable machine.
The first thing you notice about this American-made machine is how quiet it is: The Cub Cadet is powered by four 48-volt absorbed glass mat batteries and four direct-drive brushless motors. Two motors power the two independently controlled rear-drive wheels and the other two power the twin-blade 42-inch deck. Press down on the foot pedal and the machine moves nearly silently over the lawn. Engage the PTO for the deck and it produces more noise, but nothing like a standard 42-inch mower would. Cub Cadet claims one of the Zero's virtues is extending the cutting day from early morning into the evening because it's so stealthy that you're not disturbing the neighbors. There's some truth in that.
Plug the mower into a standard wall outlet to recharge it overnight. Fully charged, it provides 60 minutes of mowing time.
Thanks to its high-back seat and intuitive steering wheel control, the Zero is a joy to operate. Turn its steering wheel and sensors at the front wheels engage the rear wheels and turn them independently. This gives you the ability to pivot the mower, steer straight, or turn it in a broad arc. It couldn't be easier to use, and from what we could see, it delivers a nicely cut surface.
The RZT-S Zero is available now in select markets with an estimated cost of approximately $4500.
