Today Facebook begins rolling out Facebook Camera for iOS to English-speaking countries, a standalone photos app where you can shoot, filter, and share single or sets of photos and scroll through a feed of photos uploaded to Facebook by your friends. Developed by Facebook's photos team without the help of Instagram because the acquisition deal hasn't closed yet, Facebook Camera looks a lot like the app TechCrunch leaked images of a year ago, and is designed for quicker publishing than Facebook's multi-featured primary mobile app. Facebook Camera lets you rapidly pick one or more photos, apply filters, tag friends and locations, add a description, and post.?While its 14 filters, batch uploads, and streamlined interface are a big step up from Facebook for iOS, the design isn't as beautiful as Instagram and neither are the photos you'll see in it. When asked if Facebook Camera would become a direct competitor to the photosharing network it bought last month, a spokesman told me "As Mark asserted, we're committed to building and growing Instagram independently, so I anticipate some healthy competition."

Categories for kinship vary between languages

ScienceDaily (May 24, 2012) ? Different languages refer to family relationships in different ways. For example, English speakers use two terms -- grandmother and grandfather -- to refer to grandparents, while Mandarin Chinese uses four terms. Many possible kinship categories, however, are never observed, which raises the question of why some kinship categories appear in the languages of the world but others do not.

A new study published in Science by Carnegie Mellon University's Charles Kemp and the University of California at Berkeley's Terry Regier shows that kinship categories across languages reflect general principles of communication. The same principles can potentially be applied to other kinds of categories, such as colors and spatial relationships. Ultimately, then, the work may lead to a general theory of how different languages carve the world up into categories.

For the study, Kemp and Regier used data previously collected by anthropologists and linguists that specify kinship categories for 566 of the world's languages. Kemp and Regier used a computational analysis to explore why some patterns are found in the data set but others are not. In particular, they tested the idea that the world's kinship systems achieve a trade-off between the two competing principles of simplicity and informativeness.

"A kinship system with one word referring to all relatives in a family tree would be very simple but not terribly useful for picking out specific individuals," said Kemp, assistant professor of psychology within CMU's Dietrich College of Humanities and Social Sciences and lead author of the study. "On the other hand, a system with a different word for each family member is much more complicated but very useful for referring to specific relatives. If you look at the kinship systems in the languages of the world, you can't make them simpler without making them less useful, and you can't make them more useful without making them more complicated. There is a tradeoff between these two explanatory principles."

Kemp and Regier found that this trade-off explains why languages use only a handful of the vast number of logically possible kinship categories.

"The kinship systems that are used by languages lie along an optimal frontier, where systems achieve a near perfect trade-off between the competing factors of simplicity and usefulness," Kemp said. "English -- with two terms to refer to grandparents -- is more simple than Mandarin Chinese, but arguably a little less useful."

"Interestingly, very similar principles explain cross-language variation in color categories and spatial categories, as well as kinship categories," said Regier, associate professor of linguistics and cognitive science at Berkeley, and an author on the earlier work on color and space. "It's rewarding to see similar principles operating across such different domains."

'Duets' Premiere: Robin Thicke Says 'I'm Just Going To Show Up And Sing'

With so many reality singing competitions on TV, ABC is hoping to raise the bar with its new series "Duets", a show that partners an amateur hopeful with a superstar singer on the live stage. But don't expect mentors Kelly Clarkson, John Legend, Robin Thicke and Sugarland's Jennifer Nettles to spin around in big red chairs. These celebrities are hitting the road to find the next voice.

The biggest draw for Thicke, however, who has only had one song succeed on the pop charts (2006's "Lost Without U"), is being introduced him to a whole new audience.

HuffPost TV chatted with the new reality singing judge about his new gig on "Duets", what her learned from his dad ("Mr. Smooth") and what "morning coffee on the veranda" (a reference he made as a mentor on "The Voice") really sounds like.

What made you want to join ABC's "Duets"?
My music is my life, and my art is my life. I just wanted an opportunity for more people to hear my music. I figured that if I do this show, there will be a bunch of people who have never heard of me before listening to my music. I don't play on pop radio a lot, so it will be nice to just get my music out there. That's my goal.

It's an interesting concept for a show because you're going to be singing every week with your contestants.
That's what I wanted -- the opportunity to perform and to sing and to not just be a judge.

So you wouldn't be happy just sitting in a big red chair?
No, absolutely not. I couldn't do that.

Do you think that's where "Duets" separates itself from the other reality singing competitions?
Yeah, that's what is fun about it. We get to sing every week, and I know that the four of us all love to do that. [Laughs.] So I think it will be fun for all of us.

What are you looking for in a duet partner?
Sometimes the more different you sound from one another, the better. I'm looking for someone who sings with passion and soul because then we'll get along just fine.

Are you prepared to send people home? That's always the toughest job for a judge, especially when there can be public backlash.
Oh, I don't know. I think I'm just going to find a way to let the audience make my decision for me. I'm not really one to pick and choose, so we'll see how that goes. I really don't know how it's going to go. I'm not going to pay that much attention to it. I'm just going to show up and sing. I'm going to pick some good songs and sing them. That's what I'm going to do.

Which songs are you hoping to cover?
We'll definitely need to do some Marvin Gaye, and Al Green and some Michael Jackson or Aretha Franklin. Stevie Wonder would be great. Bob Dylan!

Your dad, Alan Thicke, is a TV icon. Did he give you any advice or did you ask him for any tips?
He's pretty much always been giving me little tips here and there. He tells me to get my charm and my game together. He pretty much leads by example. He's Mr. Smooth and Mr. Cool. He's bulletproof, so I just learn by watching him.

I'm trying to imagine Jason Seaver as Mr. Smooth.
Well, he played the silly dad! But in real life, he's Mr. Cool. He's Clark Gable.

Coincidentally, you were on "The Voice" this past season, helping Adam Levine. Did you know about "Duets" when you were guest mentoring with Adam on "The Voice"?
I actually got the offer right after I was on "The Voice".

At least you had some practice.
Exactly. Being a producer and a writer for other people, mentoring comes naturally to me. You try to pull a performance out of people when you're a producer.

There was a moment on "The Voice" when you said Nicolle Galyon's voice was like "morning coffee on the veranda." Can you please explain what morning coffee on the veranda sounds like?
Apparently, it sounds like her! [Laughs.] She just had such a sweet, peaceful voice, and it sounded like that part of the day when you're just at peace for a little bit before the day gets crazy.

Broadcast TV networks, Dish Network file lawsuits over new Auto Hop ad skipping feature

Dish Network shocked us just a couple of weeks ago by upgrading its new Hopper DVRs with "Auto Hop" ad skipping that targeted prime time programming on broadcast TV captured via its PrimeTime Anytime feature, and predictably, the networks aren't happy. After several executives took shots at the service during upfronts for the new fall programming in the past few weeks, Fox has filed suit in US District Court, while Dish Network responded with its own request for a court order specifying that it does not infringe on the TV network's copyrights. Just in the last few minutes, the New York Times reports NBC has filed a lawsuit against Dish Network as well, and it likely won't be the last one to do so. ReplayTV folded under similar legal pressure, but clearly Dish Network thinks it has a workable solution and now it's going to be up to the courts to decide who wins.
